Book Review – Grandpa’s Garden – AD sent for review

Disclosure:  We were sent this book for the purpose of review, however, our views and opinions remain our own, honest thoughts.

As you will know from a recent post on a BritMums meet up and another post I have fallen in love with Barefoot Books.  They saw my post discussing their books and very kindly offered to let me review another book for them. One super happy Mummy!!

I had their catalogue from my recent visit to the Summertown store and had already got my eye on a few treasures.

My son is named after his paternal Grandfather (see the previous post), who sadly passed away four and half months before he was born.  Daddy P comes from a long line of greengrocer’s and florists and when I noticed Grandpa’s Garden I knew that this book would become a family favourite for a very special reason. So I was thrilled when a copy arrived on our doorstep.

My son know’s who Grandpa P is, there are photos of him and his Granny P (also sadly not with us) in our Living Room.  We visit their grave regularly.  Now we have a book that will help us explain what Grandpa P did.

I have to say that this book was an immediate hit with all 3 of us.  The story is beautifully written by Stella Fry and Sheila Moxley’s illustrations are captivating and aimed at children between 3-7 years of age. As the book title suggests the story is about a Grandpa and his Grandson and the life of a vegetable garden through the seasons.  My little boy immediately grasped the whole idea of growing vegetables as he is in the process of growing his own red peppers and tomatoes. The story grabbed his attention and it’s been a favourite from the very first read.

Grandpa's Garden

Daddy P loved the way that the process of cultivating the vegetables was explained in a language that my son can understand (aged 3 and a half nearly), and the illustrations explain the story perfectly.

I love the fact that this is a lasting storybook, yes, it has a personal implication for our family, but as with the other Barefoot Books I’ve so recently discovered, it has a number of pages at the back of the book which explain more fully about the books subject matter.  So as he grows up he will get even more out of this beautiful book.

If you have green fingers children or want to encourage them to enjoy home-grown produce – this book would be a wonderful addition to your bookshelf.
