A different take on songs for children – AD sent for review

disclosure:  we were sent this CD for the purpose of review, our comments however remain our own, honest thoughts

We were recently sent a copy of the latest CD by MegsonWhen I was a Lad …… A collection of Children’s Folk Songs.

Megson - When I was a Lad

I like introducing my little boy to different music styles and a variety of children’s songs, and bless him, he also has to listen to my music collection!  So when we had the opportunity to listen to Megson’s collection of folk songs we jumped at the chance to try something new.

I’d not heard of Megson before – have you?

They are Stu and Debbie Hanna, a husband and wife duo who originate from Teeside.  They decided to put together When I was a Lad …..  after the birth of their daughter, I’m rather glad they did 🙂

The Guardian describes Megson as ….. the most original husband and wife duo on the British folk scene.  Wisely, they have recorded an album that will also appeal to parents, thanks to the harmonies and gently driving instrumental work….

I was intrigued and eager to listen to the CD containing 11 songs, some are traditional folk songs that you may have heard before such as Oats & Beans & Barley-o and there are a couple of Megson originals.

We were going on a long car journey so I decided to take our new CD with us, to see what Monkey thought.  We loved their song All the Shops have Fallen Down, it’s very cleverly written and a catchy tune too.  We were introduced to some folk songs that we had not heard before such as Leatherwing Bat – it’s a song all about birds and their courting exploits – it’s very good.  The CD finishes with a song that everyone will know, and that Monkey loves – Five Little Ducks.

We both enjoyed listening to this CD, it brings a different twist to songs you may already know, and introduces you to some new material too.  It is available to buy from the Megson Shop for £10.00 (2013 price)

Megson will be performing on:

15th June 2013   Arts Centre, Kettering at 2 pm (tel 01536 315115 for more information)
19th July 2013    Larmer Tree Festival

More show dates can also be found here.
