Junior Scholars

Junior ScholarsOn Saturday Monkey and I set off for a blogging event hosted by Junior Scholars in Watford. I’d never actually been to Watford before, but once we’d navigated around Aylesbury it was a pretty easy run and we made it to the town centre in just over an hour.  Thankfully the weather had decided to behave, and as we were a bit early we went for a little walk.  Monkey was very impressed as there were a number of diggers doing some building work in the main High Street!  We then headed for Junior Scholars to have some fun.

Junior ScholarsSo who are Junior Scholars?

At Junior Scholars, you will find a treasure trove of products and services specially designed to help 6 months to 16+ reach their true potential.

Make your child’s play really count with these great Learning Toys and Educational Games.

We were welcomed by the owners of Junior Scholars – Clive and Celia and their staff, and were shown through into an activity room, set up for the children to have some creative fun.  Monkey and I were the first to arrive which was great.

Junior ScholarsHe doesn’t cope well when walking into a strange environment with lots of people, so it was wonderful that he had the place to himself for a while.  There were lots of games (all stocked by Junior Scholars naturally) to try, as well as colouring, word search etc.  Monkey decided to try a peg board game – something that took me straight back to my own childhood.

He was well away, picking out different colours and making patterns.  I love peg boards and it ‘s great for promoting manual dexterity by placing each peg in the board.  Monkey, who will be 4 in December, gets Red and Green mixed up continually, so this game was great to try and get him to think about the colour pegs he was using.

The peg board came with a few picture cards to give you some inspiration, but as is the norm, Monkey was happy doing his own thing.

Soon we were joined by Mummy Endeavours, In the Playroom, Caterpillar Tales and 3 Kids and a Gluestick and their children.  Whilst the new arrivals settled in for some fun, Celia showed Monkey and I around Junior Scholars.  Basically the aim of the shop is to provide toys and games with an educational element right from birth!

We started at the section for Baby Scholars with the wonderful Lamaze range that Monkey loved as a baby, through to the Pre-School Scholars section and right through to the many sections dedicated to the educational needs of school age children.  There are areas focussing on English, Maths, Science and so on.  We found an area of Orchard Toys game (one of our favourite brands as you know) and were introduced to some brands for the first time.

I also noticed pens and pencil sharpeners for us lefties – Monkey takes after me.

The Junior Scholars shop is packed with ideas to help children have fun whilst learning.

There is also a hidden gem held within the vaults (literally) at Junior Scholars – The Sound Cube.  The building was once a bank and the original vaults and doors remain in the basement.  This area has become the Sound Cube ….

DSC00491…. where your children aged 7 and over (or you and friends!!) can record a song, perform a dance routine and have the day recorded with a personalised DVD.  I can imagine kids loving this idea.

Whilst your kids are having a ball, you can sit back and relax in the viewing area and watch them having their X Factor moment.

We had a lovely time with the team from Junior Scholars, and the good thing is that you don’t need to live in Watford to enjoy their ranges – you can order everything online too.

At the end of the event we were offered a game for Monkey to try at home – watch out for our thoughts later in the week.

disclaimer:  we were provided with travel cost assistance for this event, our comments however, remain our own honest opinions.

About Over 40 and a Mum to One

I'm a Mum in my late 40′s with a 7 year old son. I had a busy life in Export Sales before my Monkey came along, but decided to become a stay at home Mum once he arrived. Now I enjoy writing my own family lifestyle and travel blog. sharing the adventures that we have as Monkey makes his journey through school. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.
