Do you ever worry about your child’s temperature when they’re poorly? We have an underarm thermometer which I found easy to use when my son was a baby and compliant to my wishes!  Now I have a nearly 4-year-old son to handle, who often doesn’t want to have something cold in his armpit.  I always worry that I haven’t placed it properly and that the reading isn’t accurate.  Well, I’ve found the answer to my worries in the form of the Braun ThermoScan 5 – a Digital Ear Thermometer.

Braun ThermoScan 5

The Braun ThermoScan 5 is really easy to use and gives you an accurate reading in seconds using a unique pre-warmed tip. What I really love is that it will tell you if you haven’t positioned the prove properly – a great relief when you have a poorly child.

Basically, you press the I/O button on the front of the Braun ThermoScan 5, wait for the ready signal and beep, fit the probe snugly into the ear canal, then push the start button.  If the probe has been positioned correctly you will hear a long beep and the temperature will be displayed.  My son thinks that it’s some sort of space equipment to scan him, so he’s been very happy to let me test it out on him today.

If you haven’t displayed the probe correctly, you will hear some warning beeps and POS will show on the display.

It really is that easy to use.  The important thing is to remember to dispose of the used lenses filter that sits over the probe, after each use.  This ensures that the readings remain accurate, and there is also the hygiene aspect.   The filters are really easy to remove, and the pack comes with a set of 40 filters included.

The Braun ThermoScan 5 will automatically turn off after 60 seconds of non-use.  It also stores the last 8 temperature measurements for comparison.  A handy feature.  When you’ve finished you can store the thermometer away neatly in the protective cover.

Its RRP is around £43.90 and is available from Boots, Mothercare, John Lewis and Mamas & Papas.  The replacement filters are also readily available in packs of 40.

Ok, it’s not the cheapest, but it is very accurate and I for one, would be quite happy to pay a bit extra for that peace of mind when one of us is poorly.  The Braun ThermoScan 5 is suitable to use with all the family.  I’m really pleased that this is now part of my medicine cabinet. For more information on this thermometer and others in the range visit the Braun website.

Update:  I’m still using this thermometer to check our temperatures eight years later – its a great product.

  1. We have one of these and it’s on top of my list of absolutely essential kit for all new parents. I got it when #1 was a few months old (over six years ago) and I think we’ve only had to change the batteries once. Our GP surgery uses them too. Worth every penny knowing that accurate temperature. Great review 🙂

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
