Brio Monorail Airport set – a review for The Toadstool

Brio Monorail Airport Set    Brio Monorail Airport Set

As you know we’ve recently returned from visiting my parents in Spain.  We travelled from Birmingham Airport and Monkey was fascinated by their Monorail.  It was something he’d never seen before, so imagine his delight when The Toadstool sent us the new Brio Monorail Airport Set to review!  He is already mad about aeroplanes, airports and trains and now he has this set, to build on his new monorail obsession too!

Brio Monorail SetThe Brio Monorail Airport Set is aimed at children aged 3 years and over, and is made from 100% European sustainably forested beech wood.  It’s perfect for Monkey, who will be celebrating his 4th birthday next month.

The set comprises 22 pieces.  Including an aeroplane (with space for the pilot and a couple of passengers  or a passenger and a piece of luggage), a monorail engine and monorail carriage, an airport complete with control tower and steps, airplane boarding stairs, 2 poseable figures, a suitcase along with 5 monorail support pillars, 7 pieces of curved track and 2 pieces of ramped track.

Brio Monorail Airport SetAll track is compatible with standard wooden railway tracks, which means we can easily integrate it or use it independently.  You will need 1 x AA battery to power the main monorail wagon.

Brio Monorail Airport SetBrio Monorail Airport SetYou can also extend the play potential further with two add-on sets.  There is an extension pack consisting of 6 extra pieces of track and supports, and an extra wagon set which comes with a wagon and flight attendant.

Brio Monorail Airport setAs you would expect from a company like Brio, each piece of this set is beautifully made and the attention to detail is wonderful.  The plastic pieces are very sturdy, totally non-toxic and free from PVC and Phthalate.

Brio Monorail Airport SetWe’ve had lots of discussions about the x-ray machine which you can see on the side of the Airport/Control Tower section. Monkey had to watch his beloved Teddy go through one on our recent holiday.  The Control Tower can be fitted either way round.  The roof comes off so you can place someone at the controls – either looking down over the Airport or the Monorail – extending play potential again.

Brio Monorail Airport SetThe Brio Monorail Airport set has given Monkey hours of imaginary play as he’s zoomed off on the ‘Monarch-rail’ – he just can’t say Monorail. He’s thinking of the airline company that we flew with – bless him! We’ve discussed each part of the set – we’ve talked about walking on to the plane via the wheeled steps, just as we did when we were away.  We’ve talked about the pilot flying the plane – we saw our pilot on our flight out.  We’ve talked about the Monorail and how it works, what makes it different from an ordinary railway.  So, as you can see, there is an educational value to the Brio Monorail Airport set too.

So what did Monkey think to the Brio Monorail Airport Set?  What do you think?  He loves it.  I’d set it up ready for him when he came home from Nursery School, which took a couple of minutes (he could actually do this himself).  He ran into the Living Room and away he went. Monkey Airways Flight 001 was waiting for his passenger to arrive by Monorail ……  That was Monkey sorted for the afternoon.  He zoomed off with the aeroplane for a while and then came back to the Monorail – a quick press on the red  button on the top of the main wagon and away it goes, speeding around the track.  Daddy P also had a quick play too.  You all know we love trains in this house so the Brio Monorail Airport set is going to well used by all of us!

Since starting this review Monkey has now added parts of his normal wooden railway to the track and the Monorail wagons happily work on it with no issues at all.  I’m sure in no time at all Monkey will be building a runway extension alongside this set, with his diggers and bulldozers!

I love the original nature of the Brio Monorail Airport set, it gives us something different to play with, something that reflects our trips to Birmingham airport, a discussion point, something that Monkey can play with but also learn from.  It’s going to last, it’s going to be well used, it’s already well-loved.

Our vlog shows the set working …..

About Over 40 and a Mum to One

I'm a Mum in my late 40′s with a 7 year old son. I had a busy life in Export Sales before my Monkey came along, but decided to become a stay at home Mum once he arrived. Now I enjoy writing my own family lifestyle and travel blog. sharing the adventures that we have as Monkey makes his journey through school. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply.
