Michael Morpurgo Christmas Stories – 12 Days of Christmas books – Day 2 – AD sent for review

disclosure:  we were sent this book for the purpose of review

For the second instalment of my 12 Days of Christmas books, I bring you an absolute gem – Michael Morpurgo Christmas Stories, published by Egmont.  This book contains 4 lovely stories from this wonderful author, all with a Christmas theme. Not all of the books I will be featuring will be aimed specifically at children my son’s age – this is one of those books.

Michael Morpurgo Christmas Stories

Michael Morpurgo Christmas Stories is a paperback book, containing The Goose is Getting Fat, The Best of Times, The Best Christmas Present in the World and On Angel Wings.  There are 191 pages in total.  This book is aimed at children aged 5 years and over, the stories are all of a longer length with lots of text and are beautifully illustrated by Sophie Allsopp, Emma Chichester Clark, Michael Foreman and Quentin Blake.

This is a storybook for my son to grow into over the coming year.  He’s very good at concentrating when I’m reading to him, but even these wonderfully written stories are a little long for him, just yet. We’ve read them all in instalments.  I try to remind him of what happened previously and we start again.

We were drawn to The Best Christmas Present in the World as it ties in with World War One.  We were reading it at just the right time, last weekend over Remembrance Sunday.  It tells the story of a discovery in an old desk, a letter from the First World War, a keepsake, a letter dated from Boxing Day 1914.  A letter to a wife from a husband in the trenches, recalling a now well-remembered event.  A game of football, a truce, on Christmas Day, a letter from a husband who never returned.

It tells the story of a brief friendship made between men on opposing sides of the conflict.  The letter is found by the new owner of the desk, and he resolves to give it back to the wife, who had treasured it and lost it.  The letter is returned to its rightful owner and makes a wonderful Christmas present.

As you would expect, Michael Morpurgo Christmas Stories is a collection of beautifully written stories.  This book would make a great addition to any home this Christmas, it’s a keeper.  A book for all ages, a treasure to enjoy at any time of year.
