Waiting for the Torch

My blog with be properly a year old next month.  I sometimes forget that it’s less than a year old.  I think of writing something and linking it to a visit somewhere and then realise that it was ‘pre blog’!  Time has flown.  My What’s the Story? and Magic Moments post goes back to the summer of 2012, pre-blog, waiting for the Torch, the Olympic Torch to visit town.

Waiting for the TorchThis is Monkey, aged 2 and half with his Olympic flame Union Jack flag waiting for the Torch.  It seems so strange to see him sitting in a buggy, he was only in it that day for a seat.  It got us a good position too! He loves this flag, it’s still up in his bedroom now.

I love the Olympic Games, would have loved to have gone, but money was very tight and we didn’t get selected for the tickets we had applied for.  There was Monkey waiting for the Torch to come through town, he had no idea what all the fuss was about, he just wanted a flag.

It was one of those wonderful events where people actually came out onto the streets, it felt so special, being British that day.  Monkey won’t remember it at all, a once in a lifetime opportunity, but I’m so glad he was there. By some miracle one of my NCT friends and her son and daughter found us in the crowds and the kids sat together.  A special moment for the three of them to share, another moment from their little lives that they have shared together.

The Olympic Torch procession was gone in the blink of an eye, but Monkey was there, waiting for the torch, seeing it go by.  As he gets older I’ll be able to tell him that he was there.  I guess it will mean as much to him as my Dad telling me I watched the first man land on the moon, did to me!

About Over 40 and a Mum to One

I'm a Mum in my late 40′s with an 8 year old son. I had a busy life in Export Sales before my Monkey came along, but decided to become a stay at home Mum once he arrived. Now I enjoy writing my own family lifestyle and travel blog. sharing the adventures that we have as Monkey makes his journey through school. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing days out, toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.

  1. The torch didn’t go through the so-called “town” where I live but I saw the torch on stage with McFly at BT London Live (Harry Judd and Aliona Vilani had carried the torch in Blackpool during the relay) but to be honest I was more impressed with Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter than with the torch – they are stunning.

  2. How wonderful Mary, it was such an incredible Summer wasn’t it. We loved the Olympics, such a great sense of community. Must have been great to see the torch pass by and get this photograph of Monkey. It will be great for him to look back on this image and read all about the medals. Exciting you have your bloggerversary coming up, I thought you’d been around for much longer! Lovely post, thank you so much for sharing #whatsthestory
