I’m always looking for ways to keep Monkey amused, especially with the awful weather we’ve been having recently. This week we’ve been having fun with Weekend Box, an action packed activity pack that pops neatly through your letterbox every two weeks!
Inside the Weekend Box are four colour defined activities which include something to cook, make, explore and something green.
Each activity is designed to build exploration skills within little ones aged 3-8 as well as teach them about different life skills in a fun and engaging way.
The first thing you will recognise – no plastic in sight! Well, with one minor exception for our exploration task. Even the box doubles up as a certificate to be coloured in once all tasks have been completed.
We decided to start with the Green activity first – making a Lolly Stick Feeder. This will come in so useful this weekend for the RSPB Bird Watch – perfect timing!
There are clear instructions for each project and the coloured envelopes contain all of the essential items. Monkey, aged 4, was keen to get started.
We decided that Monkey would be in charge of glueing for this task, and for keeping the lolly sticks in a straight line.
We started to stack the lolly sticks up to form the table – Monkey loved seeing the bird table appear before his eyes.
Now as you can see the only issue we had with this task, was with the string that was provided. It was way too short for the task, which could have caused some disappointment, but I wasn’t in the Brownie’s for nothing! Mummy to the rescue with some garden twine.
So our Lolly Stick bird table is now hanging in the garden, and our bird seed was even included. Breakfast is served!
Next up, our Blue Making task – DIY 3D Glasses! Now Monkey turned 4 last month, he can cut in a straight line, but isn’t great with keeping to guidelines and curves. So to ensure we actually ended up with useable glasses, I took control of the cutting! I’m sure older children could make the glasses themselves.
Monkey loved looking through the coloured acetate sheets, even before we’d made the glasses!
Then it was time for Monkey’s first 3D experience (he doesn’t like the cinema at the moment, so this was all new to him). There are 5 x 3D scenes to look at included with this activity, along with questions to answer. So great for making children think about what they are seeing, great for discussion.
Then onto our Yellow exploration task – Sand Art. I have to be honest, I’m not one for loads of mess, especially having an OCD Daddy P to contend with. So I was a little unsure about this task. But, Monkey absolutely loved it, he obviously wasn’t going to follow the instructions, he was going to do his own thing, but that’s half the fun isn’t it. There was more than enough coloured sand and glue to complete the 2 sand art pictures and make something else. Monkey was in his element, he did end up mixing all the colours together, but he had so much fun, and there really wasn’t that much mess for me to clear up afterwards.
Today we’ll be baking – Potato Boats (you obviously need to provide your own fresh ingredients) with our red baking task. I’m sure Monkey will have a great time, let hope I can get him to eat them – not too keen on potato these days!
We’ve been really been having fun with Weekend Box and it’s great for giving us structured activities. I always have ideas, but don’t always translate that to action! To have the key items to carry out the activities is also great.
I can also share a couple of reader offer’s with you all 🙂
Firstly, I have a unique promo code for you, my readers. If you could like to try a Weekend Box for yourself – totally free, including delivery, then please use MARY97 when ordering on the website.
Secondly, as an extra bonus for you all – during January, using the promo code above, if you sign up to Weekend Box you will get ALL future boxes for just £5.00 (normally £7.50). I’m sure you’d have lots of fun, and the tasks can be worked on together if you have more than one child. Enjoy!
