Reading Chest

Reading Chest – review and reader offer

Reading ChestYou all know how much we love books in this house, Monkey and I sit and read together all the time.  I can’t persuade him to start learning his letters.  But he’ll happily sit while I read to him for hours, literally.  So when we came across Reading Chest, I was rather keen to find out more.

Reading Chest was launched in 2010. It is a through-the-post book rental service for children, specialising in reading scheme books for 4 to 9 year olds and works along similar lines to DVD rental companies.

Reading Chest is very simple to use and you create your account online.  There are three different packages available:

Bronze package – up to 6 books a month
Silver package – up to 12 books a month and multiple books lists*
Gold package – unlimited supply of books and multiple book lists*

* This means that you can get books for siblings learning to read who are at different reading levels or with different book preferences.

I opted for the Silver package, which provides Monkey with 4 books in his first delivery and up to 4 swaps per month for £12.95 per month.  You then select relevant book band for your child’s ability and age – there are 12 bands to choose from, we opted for Red, aged 4-5 years.  This works along the same lines as the Oxford Reading Tree scheme.

We waited for our first books to arrive, we didn’t have to wait long at all.  Very prompt service.

Reading ChestWe received 4 books from various Reading Schemes, a great adventurers sticker chart to track our progress, a book bag and lots of other information.

Reading Chest has opened my eyes to Reading Scheme books and made me realise it’s an area that we are sadly lacking in here.  We go to the Library all the time, and I have to be honest, I was a bit sceptical about whether I would pay to borrow more books.  But I can now see, that Reading Chest offer us more variety and would certainly be very useful as we start our journey.  As Monkey learns to read.

You are provided with a Pre-Paid envelope to return 3 books at any one time.  We returned our first books and received 3 news ones by return of post.  We haven’t used all of our 4 swops in a month, but these are carried forward, to a maximum of 10 in any month for the Silver package.  It’s more than enough for us at this time in our reading journey.

You can actually keep the books for as long as you like, there are no late fees.  We’re waiting for another set of books to be delivered, going by previous experience they should arrive today!

We can certainly recommend Reading Chest and actually we have a great offer for you too!  Use this code HAPPY2014 to receive £5.00 off their first month membership.  (There is no minimum membership period.)

disclaimer:  we were given two months free trial of this service in exchange for an honest review.
