Candy Construction Activity Set – a review

Candy ConstructionWe are big fans of Learning Resources in this house, their products are often found in schools and nurseries.  We’ve reviewed the Play Foam and Avalanche Fruit Stand before, you can guarantee fun, whilst learning, with their products.  When we received the Candy Construction Activity Set, I knew it was going to be a big hit.

Candy Construction Activity SetThe Candy Construction Activity Set comes with 92 plastic construction pieces with a ‘sweets’ theme and an instruction booklet.  The set is aimed at children between the ages of 4-8 years. It’s a great set for developing fine motor skills.  Monkey is 4 years old and construction mad.  How would he get on?

Candy Construction Activity SetHe couldn’t wait to empty the box out.  What’s this Mummy?  The coloured pieces are really sturdy, there are a few flexible pieces with a rubber feel to them, but the rest are made of robust plastic.  I love the colours, it’s going to appeal to boys and girls.

I was interested to see how Monkey would cope with the instruction booklet, he hardly needed me.  Once he got started, he was off.

Candy Construction Activity SetWhen he’d finished making the Swing and realised it would actually move, he was in his element.  I think the photo below shows how much he was enjoying himself.

Candy Construction Activity SetThere’s a lot of creative construction play and problem solving involved with the Candy Construction Activity Set.  It’s kept Monkey entertained for hours.  He had a play date with one of his friends last week.  They two of them played with this set side by side.  No arguments, plenty of pieces to go around.  Lots of fun.

The play pieces slot together, click together, or slide through.  The play potential is endless.

We did have one slight niggle with the set. We tried to make the Yummy Buggy which involved bending over the flexible rubber rods, but we found they just would not stay in the holes of the other play pieces.  Whether this is because the pieces are new, and need to be played with a bit more, to make them more flexible?  I don’t know.  It annoyed Monkey for a moment, and then he was on to something new.  But in general, the pieces stay together well once clicked into place.

Priced at £33.54, I really like this set.  It’s caught Monkey’s imagination in a way I haven’t really seen before.  He liked trying the build ideas in the booklet, but wanted to build his own creations.  Bridges and tunnels for his railway, windmills and turbines.  He loves the moving parts element of this construction.

I can see the Candy Construction Activity Set being a firm favourite for a long time to come.

    1. It hinestly isn’t complicated. He really just got the whole idea of it very quickly. You’re right, I’m sure the designs will grow as he gets older, which just proves its value to me.

  3. I love Learning Resources products – having used them both in the classroom and at home.
