Aqua Dragons

Aqua Dragons – a review

Aqua Dragons

Monkey has become dinosaur obsessed recently.  So when I was offered the chance to look at something that would take us back to the Jurassic period, I had to say yes.  It was time to introduce Monkey to the Aqua Dragons Jurassic Time Travel EGGspress set.

Aqua Dragons Aqua Dragons

Now, the first thing I have to say is that this Aqua Dragons set is aimed at children aged 6 years and over.  As Monkey is only 4 years old, he was under strict instructions that he could help, but that Mummy was in charge!

With the Aqua Dragons set we received – Jurassic Time Travel EGGspress, you should receive the Aqua Dragons egg-shaped tank, eggs, food, spoon and instruction booklet.  Our set was missing the instruction leaflet.  I thought we’d be fine as there are some instructions on the packaging.  I was wrong.  Should this happen to you, then you can find full instructions here.  You really do need an adult to supervise the Aqua Dragons, and you really do need the full instructions to ensure they receive the care that they need to survive.

Monkey has been fascinated with our Aqua Dragons since he saw the packaging.  Mummy, are we growing a T-Rex?  So ok , I did have to manage his expectation somewhat!  But his enthusiasm has been maintained for over a month, through our first mishap and onto our second set of Aqua Dragons complete with full instructions.

What are Aqua Dragons?  Well you receive Eggs which look like fine white powder, pour the eggs into your tank, add bottled water and wait for a few days.  The Aqua Dragons are tiny when they first hatch, but we can see loads of them now.  Once they’ve hatched you feed them using the spoon provided every 4 days. The spoon you receive with this particular set doesn’t have a scoop section, so I personally feel that children could easily overfeed (and therefore kill) the Aqua Dragons.  I’m in charge of feeding with Monkey looking on.  Once the Aqua Dragons hatch you will need to oxygenate your tank every day for the first month.  Pour the contents of your tank into a jug, wash the tank out (I’ve been doing this with bottled water to be on the safe side as tap water can kill the Aqua Dragons) and then gently pour the water and Aqua Dragons back into the tank.

The Aqua Dragons (Artemia salina) can grow up to 2cms over the course of 2 months.  I’ve tried taking photographs of our Aqua Dragons but you really can’t see them well enough with my camera.  But trust me, they are amazing little creatures, quite mesmerising to watch.  You can see what they look like here.

For older children I can see these Aqua Dragons being a great introduction to the idea of having and looking after a pet.  If you are lucky, your Aqua Dragons will mate and leave eggs behind when they die, so you can start the life cycle again.

You can also buy extra food and more eggs, so this can be an ongoing project for the kids. Monkey is memorised.

The Aqua Dragons Jurassic Time Travel EGGspress Set has a RRP of £10.00 and is the latest edition from Brainstorm Ltd. You can see the full range on Amazon and selected lines from the Aqua Dragons range are also available at Smyths, Toys R Us, Toymaster stores and all good toy retailers.

  1. These look fascinating! I think my son would love to have a go at growing these, and it would be a good way to teach him about the circle of life. I had heard of these little creatures before and always wondered what they were, so thanks. I can see a summer holiday project coming on!

  2. I saw this before and wanted to get one for my kids . This is a great way to teach children!

  3. Ryan loves these. He has hatched quite a few. When they die I just order more eggs and food. He also tried out the Triops which are similar but grow bigger and need a bit more care.
I do like the egg shaped tank.

  4. The spoon does have a scoop but it is very tiny! Opposite end to the flat part. Just a level scoop every few days. Aeration is daily for the life of the aqua dragons not just the first month. Also never wash out the tank! Just top it up. By washing it out you destroy the eco system and algae these guys need. Once the eco system is established they eat the algae. The food is very expensive too so i buy spironella from the natural food store. They love it. I have had mine for over 2 years and also raise triops which are a little more difficult and need to be fed alot! Tip for triops put aquarium plants like elodea in the tank for them to eat. They can be cannibalistic if food runs low.

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
