Convivial Cornwall: The best events in Cornwall this summer

If you’re visiting Cornwall this summer, this post might be just what you need to need:

It’s no wonder that England’s south-western tip attracts so many visitors during the summer months, considering that Cornwall has 400 miles of spectacular coastline to explore. At any time of year, you can surf the waves, join the bucket-and-spade brigade making sand castles or hunt for little sea creatures among the rock pools. But, when the summer months arrive, the packed events programme brings even more reasons to visit this small-but-perfectly formed county. Here are just a few of the best days out for June, July and August:

Super Seven – June 28 and 29

Rugby fans are in for a treat in Newquay this June as the town hosts the biggest rugby sevens event in the south-west. For those not familiar, rugby sevens is a variant of rugby union where teams are made up of seven players, rather than the usual 15. It’s a great introduction to the sport as, while a normal match is 80 minutes’ long, sevens is two halves of seven minutes with a one-minute half-time break – ideal if you’re with little ones, or those with a short attention span. Newquay Surf 7s hosts 100 of the best rugby sevens teams from all over Europe, and there’s no charge for spectators. Held at the Newquay Sports Centre, there’s even camping available on site if you want to stay in the heart of the action. And, as Rugby Sevens is set to be an Olympic sport for the first time ever in 2016, you’ll be ahead of the curve when the Games start in Rio.

Grand Day Out Family Fun Day – June 29

This event does pretty much what it say on the tin, providing a whole day of entertainment geared towards families. Taking place at the Royal Cornwall Showground, there’s a fun fair, dog show, car boot sale and live music. And, family fun comes with a conscience as it’s all to raise money for the local hospice. There are also stalls selling the freshest Cornish produce, so you can stock up on food for a picnic. Or, if you’re staying in self-catering accommodation, you can take some scrumptious goodies back with you to cook for supper. Parkdean’s White Acres caravan park nearby is a good base for those travelling with small children as it has a pre-school club, a toddler’s pool and a playground just for the under 5s.

Polo anyone? – July 5 and 6

Given that princes William and Harry both play the sport, it’s hardly surprising polo has something of an elitist reputation. But, not only does Cornwall host one of the most spectacular polo matches across the world, the action is free to watch. Play takes place on the sands at Watergate Bay, with the horses thundering across the beach and into the shallow waves as players chase the ball. Along with the matches themselves, there’s a stunt show with professional trick riders and, new for this year, Segway polo. Pop along and see the Cornish team’s horses in action, including Panina, who will be defending her Best Playing Pony title and speedy Shrivar, the ex-racehorse who raced against a kite surfer last year – and won!

A celebration of seafood – July 12

One of the joys of travelling anywhere, whether you’re staycationing or heading further afield, is sampling the local cuisine. And, as you might expect from a county surrounded by sea on three sides, the seafood is particularly special in Cornwall. There’s lots of conflicting advice about the right way to eat an oyster, but however you do it, you’ll find plenty to try at the Rock Oyster Festival, which takes place at the stunning venue of Dinham House, overlooking the Camel Estuary. There’s the oyster shucking, or shell opening, competition. But, it’s not all about oysters, so even if you aren’t a confirmed oyster lover, you’ll find something to taste and do. Along with oysters, there’s live music, circus acts, kids’ entertainment and a shopping bazaar.

Back in time – 19 and 20 August

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to witness the fearsome clash of knights in days gone by as they partake in a jousting contest, then a trip to Pendennis Castle is a must. Cheer on the knight in your favourite colours, laugh at the jester’s jokes and listen to the gory stories as told by the medieval executioner. There’s also live music and falconry displays in a day which should bring history to life for children, and the young at heart. Let battle commence!

Whenever you’re visiting Cornwall and wherever you are in the county, you’ll find a fair or festival to suit you. Whether you’re a foodie, a music lover or a sports fan, there’s an event to fit.
