Back to work

Life is going to change so much for Monkey and I this year.  He’ll be starting full time school in September and I need to start thinking about going back to work.  That is quite daunting!  I went on maternity leave in October 2009, a year later I resigned from my position working in Export Business Development.  So by the time Monkey starts school it will be 5 years since I last sat in an office – eek!

Technology has moved on so much in that time for one thing.  You really notice it when you are not in a working environment.  Well I have anyway!  Not in the loop of what’s the latest must have gadget or bit of software.  No-one on hand when the laptop does a belly flop.

Also what will I do?  I spent over 20 years in Export – admin, shipping, sales and business development.  Travelling is a non starter as Daddy P works over 80 hours a week and I have no family child care available.  Do I want a full time job?  Do I want something that fits in with Monkey’s school hours?  What do you do over school holidays?  Who can/would I trust to look after Monkey after school?  So much to think about?  If I don’t go back to an Export environment, what do I do?  Will people look at my CV and just see 46 with a young child?  Will people give me a chance?  How do I get my CV looking it’s best?  Do I want to commute?  If Daddy P wasn’t tied to his business – would I want to work abroad?

Can you tell I’ve been thinking about this for a while and then putting it in the ‘think about later’ section of my brain!

back to work

I’m sure I’m going to need some help finding the right job and recruitment agencies are always a good place to start.  I’ve also discovered City Calling – a great online company who link candidates to jobs in cities all over the world.  So whether you are searching for finance jobs in New York, sales jobs in Paris or construction jobs UK, they are on hand to help point you in the right direction.  What’s more their service is free to join.

When I go back to work, when I find the right job, then I’m going to need to look at my wardrobe too.  I’ve lived in jeans, tops and easy shoes, boots and flip-flops for the last 5 years.  That’s a whole different area to worry about!

Wish me luck as I start the journey – going back to work.

  1. Ah, a job with jeans and flip flops would be handy! That is a lot to think about. I’ve enough just thinking about Boo starting school, without all of this, too. I’m starting to plan classes and activities in for Little Man. Hope you manage to settle on what you’d like to do as there are so many variables and possibilities for you. And I’m quite sure your CV will look very strong x

  2. Definitely sounds like you need something from home or something that suits school hours. It’s hard isn’t it? I don’t have childcare so I’ve been lucky to work around Husband’s shift but that isn’t an option now. I’ve applied to go to college to do childcare to become a nursery teacher. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for awhile but it also suits the school for holidays etc. Good luck!

  3. Wishing you the very best of luck. I’m doing the same and have stopped my childminding career a few months earlier specifically for planning and setting my career plans in motion. It’s proving a bit trickier than I thought with emotions running high. I am trying very hard to turn the anxieties into hope and just do everything that I can to make this happen. That is all I can do. Looking forward to hearing what your next steps will be!

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
