My Mum has always been a keen gardener and I grew up surrounded by plants of all descriptions.  One company name that I remember from my childhood is Sutton Seeds. Not only do they sell seeds these day, but they also supply plants, fruit trees and gardening equipment.  We had a special delivery for Monkey recently – Monkey gets planting with Sutton Seeds  – he had lots of fun growing his own Jungle!

Monkey received the Jungle in a Box set, part of the Fun to Grow series, especially designed for children.   In our set we received a propagator, magic pear pellets, 3 different plant seeds – Coleus Rainbow mix, Mimosa and Amaranthus, plant markers, a game with crayons and glitter.

We decided we’d save the game for a rainy day, and crack on with the planting.  We followed the instructions on the back of the pack which advised us to half fill the tray with warm water and wait 10 minutes for the peat pellets to expand.

Monkey got really excited by this bit of magic.

Once the timer beeped Monkey was in charge of sowing his seeds, half the pellets with Mimosa and half with Coleus.

Then it was time to put the lid on the propagator and place on our kitchen window sill.

We checked it regularly and made sure the seeds were well watered.  Before we knew it they’d grown.  Sadly we only had one Mimosa come through, but gardening is all about learning that you don’t always get 100% success.  A useful lesson for a 4 and half year old Monkey to learn.

We planted the houseplants into some pots and look forward to watching them flourish.

Monkey  gets planting with Sutton Seeds – he planted the Amaranthus seeds in the garden as per the instructions a few weeks ago, but we’ve no signs of seedlings as yet.I’m hoping that the torrential rain we’ve had didn’t wash them away.

We’ll wait and keep our fingers crossed that they emerge at some point.

The How to create a Jungle set is available on the Sutton Seeds website for £4.99, I’ve also seen the range available in our local Sainsburys.

Now, we did also receive something for me to plant.  Unfortunately our Aquilegia Crimson Star arrived on the Friday that I went to BritMums.  Poor Daddy P had no idea there was a plant inside the package, until I got home on the Sunday afternoon.  I can only imagine that normal deliveries (rather than reviews) come with packing confirming live plants are inside.

We’ve been trying to bring it back to life over the last week before planting it in the garden.

I planted it in the garden yesterday and I’m sure the Aquilegia will come back to life in time. I really love them and don’t have one with this colouring.  Fingers crossed, as these are great for attracting bees for pollination.

The Aquilegia Crimson Star is available for £7.99.

disclaimer:  we were sent these items in exchange for an honest review

  1. Boo would love this, too! We really enjoy getting out gardening together. That aquilegia probably needs cutting right the way back, and then it might come back, with lots of water, too?

  2. Whoopsie Daddy P. Something Hubby would do too though. Fingers crossed it comes back to life.

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
