The Amber Fury – a book review

I love reading, always have.  Sadly the days of lounging around on holiday with a suitcase full of books are behind me until Monkey is considerably older.  But I always try to read before I go to sleep every night, even if it’s only a few pages.  Atlantic Books have sent me some great books recently.  I finished The Amber Fury a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed it.

The Amber Fury

The Amber Fury is written by Natalie Haynes and tells the story of Alex Morris and the events that follow a move away from tragedy.

From the start of this psychological thriller we know that something awful happened in Alex’s life in London,  She’s run away from London and her life as a Director in theatreland. She starts working in a Pupil Referral Unit for a friend in Edinburgh.  We get to know her and a group of teenagers in one of her groups.

It did take a while for me to really get to grips with this book, but I liked the way that the story flipped between the last, the present and the diary of one of the students.   I was intrigued to find out what had happened before the move to Scotland and what was going to happen now.

Alex Morris loves Greek Tragedies and uses the plays to try to reach this group of children, getting them to question their lives and think about emotions, consequences and actions.

Without ruining the story of The Amber Fury for you, I did guess what had happened in London fairly early on, but not the circumstances.  But as for what happened in the present, no I didn’t see it coming.

The Amber Fury was an enjoyable read, it didn’t totally grab my attention, but I did want to finish it and liked the unexpected ending.

disclaimer:  we were sent this book in exchange for an honest review

About Over 40 and a Mum to One

I'm a Mum in my late 40′s with a 7 year old son. I had a busy life in Export Sales before my Monkey came along, but decided to become a stay at home Mum once he arrived. Now I enjoy writing my own family lifestyle and travel blog. sharing the adventures that we have as Monkey makes his journey through school. We have a cat called Brewster who makes appearances and I’m a mad Ferrari Formula 1 fan, so that expect to hear about as each season unfolds. We love reviewing toys, games and books and would love the opportunity to look at anything that fits in with our family lifestyle. We are always out and about and offering an insight on the places we visit, with a passion for nature thrown in for good measure. If you like what you read please leave me a comment, I love to hear from people, and always try to reply. Enjoy the read.
