We are really pleased to now be Parragon Book Buddy and I’m looking forward to bringing you lots of exciting titles over the coming months. This month I received a new cook book – Great British Cooking.
Great British Cooking is part of the Love Food series of books from Parragon, a series I know well. This 224 page paperback cook book is crammed full of traditional British cuisine; from Kedgeree, Leek and Potato Soup, Beef Stew and Dumplings, various roasts, veggie dishes and some scrummy puddings.
It’s a great reference point and has some useful conversion pages at the back of the book.
I was taken back to my childhood whilst flicking through Great British Cooking. You will need to be of a certain age to remember a Blue Peter trip to Mousehole in Cornwall. They made Star-Gazey Pie, and there it was all these years later in my new cook book! I wasn’t sure that a nearly 5-year-old Monkey was quite ready for this particular pie with fish heads, but one day i will make it!
I settled for Fisherman’s Pie instead from the Classic Pub Grub section; whilst the recipe asked for fillets of white fish, I had a few fish packs containing a mixture of Cod, Salmon and Smoke Haddock so made a slight variation.
The recipe was easy to follow, and apart from the fact I am not the best at making sauces, the Fisherman’s pie went down a treat with all of us, and Monkey ate mashed potato – woop! woop! Another major breakthrough on the food front.
From the Weekend Wonders section I recently made the Perfect Macaroni Cheese. I was in a hurry and didn’t have any spinach available, so omitted that from the recipe. Again so easy to follow; yes I still struggled with the sauce – but that’s down to me rather than the cook book. Practice will make perfect. But the results – scrummy! Mummy, that was lovely, and empty plates all round. A great, quick meal at the end of a busy day.
I’ve spotted lots of recipes I want to try out; especially the Irish Stew and Treacle Tart; two personal favourites. I think Great British Cooking would make a great present for someone setting up home as it really does cover all the favourites from home.
You can keep up to date with all the latest news from Parragon on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
disclaimer: we were sent this book in exchange for an honest review
What a great book. I swapped from cookery to kids books and am now kicking myself. But such a good price worth investing in anyway
I’m alternating between the two, so it works well for both of us!
Macaroni cheese is our family favourite, I have some spinach so might have a go at adding that this week. Well done with the potato break through!
