Caring for a cat

Caring for a cat

I’m a cat person through and through.  We did have a couple of dogs at home as kids, I loved them, but not as much as the cats!  Over the years we’ve had cats from pet shops, a rescue centre and a farm, and Brewster was born in a stable yard.  Whether it was with my parents or my own pets, caring for a cat is more than just feeding them and giving them cuddles.

Right from a kitten there are a number of things to consider, all come with a cost.  I’m a firm believer in having pets inoculated to prevent disease.  Yearly boosters are also required, these aren’t cheap, but give you peace of mind and help to ensure a long, happy and healthy life for your pet.

Next – micro chipping.  It’s quick and easy to have this done at the Vets.  It’s not that expensive, and trust me, having had cats that have lost countless name tags over the years, it’s the best option.  You do need to remember to get your registered details updated if you move (with the registration company) but it’s a must.  If your cat strays or should have an accident, it’s so easy for them to be reunited with you quickly.

Neutering – cats are rather like rabbits.  Do the decent thing and get your cat neutered!  I had Brewster neutered and micro chipped at the same time and the vet gave me a discount.  It the responsible thing to do.

I get worming tablets from the vet along with a flea treatment.  They are more expensive than the ones in the pet shops but they are really effective and I’d rather be absolutely certain that Brewster is worm free and that he and our house are flea free!  Trust me, a house with a flea infestation is no fun.  Fleas can lie dormant in your carpets for ages, the weather turns cold, the heating comes on and the fleas think its party time.  I use Stronghold once a month – it’s fab.

As long-term readers of this blog know, cats can live to a ripe old age.  I lost my saggy old cats at 17 and 19 years of age.  Caring for a cat can be a costly business, especially if they are prone to fighting with all the cats in the neighbourhood, need dental treatment, or come worse off fighting with a car.  I’ve always believed in having cat insurance to give me peace of mind.  There are many providers these days, offering varying levels of cover.  If a cat has a medical condition needing operations and medication, it can be extremely expensive, and insurance cover can certainly help ease the strain.

Brewster is 2 and half now, and full of beans.  A real character, who I hope above anything else has a long, happy and healthy life.  He’s certainly much loved and cared for in this house.  Is it time for a cuppa Mum?

  1. Brewster is gorgeous! Our cats were born in a stable too, I love that we saved them from a life as stable cats x
