You may remember that we had great fun last year reviewing an arts and craft delivery service from Weekend Box Club.  Well, we’ve been having more fun lately and Monkey will be celebrating Chinese New Year with Weekend Box Club.

The Weekend Box Club offers a postal delivery service of an arts and craft activity pack which fits neatly through your letterbox and is aimed at children between the ages of 3-6 years of age.  Each pack is themed, and our pack contained 4 different activities all based around Chinese New Year – making a paper plate drum, Chinese lanterns, Chinese dragons and fortune cookies.

Each activity is colour coded with an instruction leaflet and activity pack containing everything you need to complete each task (with exception of cooking ingredients and a used toilet roll). Monkey was raring to go and he decided he wanted to make the Chinese Dragon first.

He put me in charge of drawing and cutting out his dragon’s head and tail.  But I was given strict design guidelines.  He took control of folding the dragon’s body.  He then followed the instructions to put his Chinese Dragon together.

Then it was down to some serious painting, we received some blue powder poster paint in our Weekend Box Club pack, so I mixed it with a little water and Monkey was away.

Monkey loved this activity and he was totally absorbed as he made up and decorated his Chinese Dragon.

While the Chinese Dragon dried we moved on to the Chinese Lanterns craft activity.  For this we needed a used toilet roll, which we had – we could begin.

Although you could have used a bit of card or paper if you didn’t have a spare roll to hand. Again everything else was provided for this activity.  I cut the slits into the toilet roll and Monkey did the rest.

Monkey had to wait for the paint to dry before we could attach the handle, so we were off on our next Chinese New Year Crafting adventure – making a paper plate drum.  Monkey was a little mystified with this one.  Mummy how can a plate be a drum?  At this point I thought I’d make him really laugh.  Shall I show you a really old photo of Mummy with this sort of drum Monkey??

Cue fits of laughter when I produced this photo taken on New Years Eve in 1994 in Thailand.

Oh dear!  But you get the idea Monkey!

I have to be honest and say that this was our least successful project in terms of build.  We followed the instructions using the blu tac provided to attach the lolly sticks to the plates and the plates to each other.  Not a great success.  Really the sticks need to be glued into the plates and the plates either glued or perhaps stapled together.  But, Monkey still loved putting his drum together and decorating it.  We did find that the ribbon we received was only long enough for one side, so we substituted that for some ribbon I had in our craft box.  With some slight modifications this would still be a great activity.

Our three crafting activities were completed and we’d had a great afternoon learning about Chinese New Year (notes are included with the set).

Even the box that the Weekend Box Club packs come in can be used to create a certificate, so Monkey set to work with his colouring pens.

We’ll be making the Fortune Cookies soon but they sound scrummy.

The Weekend Box Club boxes can be received fortnightly or monthly, you pay £3.75 for your first box and then £7.50 for all subsequent boxes (billed monthly) with free postage.   There is no long-term committment – you can pause your deliveries at any time.

For new customers I have a reader offer!  Receive your first Weekend Box for free using code MARY97 at Weekend Box Club  (new customers only please and just one free box is allowed per household).

We’ve certainly had fun celebrating Chinese New Year with Weekend Box Club, I wonder what theme you would receive if you take up this reader offer?  Do let me know if you try it out.

  1. This activity set looks great and I do like the idea that they’ve tailored it to suit seasonal themes; I love your 1994 photo – I bet Monkey was mesmerised to think you had a life before he got here!!
