uTalk language app – review and giveaway

We’re off to Spain in a couple of weeks and I wanted to work on my rather rusty Spanish beforehand,  I’ve been using the uTalk language app to help me!  The app is available for both iPhone and iPad users.

uTalk language app

The basic uTalk language app is free, offering 120 different languages, you can then upgrade in an in-app purchase for more features for a specific language.  As I’ve mentioned already, I’ve been looking at the Spanish premium app which costs £11.99.

Once I’d installed the Premium app I could see I’d never be bored with the uTalk language app!  There are so many subjects to choose from:

First Words, Adjectives, Holiday, Food and Drink, Fruit, Vegetables, Transport, Travelling, Directions, Accommodation, Numbers up to 20, Numbers up to 10 million!, Time, Phrases, Restaurant, Social Phrases, Emergencies, Body, Doctor, Clothes, Shopping Words, Shopping Phrases, Technology, Prepositions, Colours, Calendar, Illness, Likes and Dislikes, Leisure, Sports, Countries, Outdoors, Family, Animals and Alphabet.

See what I mean – very comprehensive.  In each category there are different options to practice your language skills.

In the Practice game, you can listen to words and phrases being spoken and you see them on-screen too.  You can then record yourself and listen back to your attempt as well as listening to how it should be said.  I think it would be great if the app could highlight words as they are being spoken to help beginners. I’ve found this game really useful as I know my pronunciation needs working on!  My hearing isn’t the best so I do wish there was an option for the speakers to speak a little slower, so I have more time to hear what’s being said, but there is a repeat button.  Update:  I’ve been advised that there is a button to slow this down – I will be trying that out!

Once you’ve worked through the uTalk language app vocabulary for the section, then there are a number of other games to play – easy, speaking , hard and memory games and I’ve been working my way through these games over the last month.

When you complete each game you go on a World Tour, learning about different destinations as you go.

uTalk language app

Although the app is a little advanced for my 5 year old son, he has enjoyed listening to the First Words, Colours and Numbers with me and I’ll certainly be using the app to help him improve his Spanish in the years to come.

The real test will come when I’m surrounded by our Spanish friends in a couple of weeks, but hopefully I’ll have improved since our last visit!

disclaimer:  we were given free access to this app in exchange for an honest review

  1. I would probably choose French as we love France! Although I am sure Lydia, Dominic and Seb will learn it at school and I know the basics so German would be good as they have such an influence on Europe but no I think I would pick French for Lydia, Dominic and Seb as they would get immediate benefits.

  2. Would go for German as my daughters have been learning it and would like to continue with it for a while x

  3. I would pick Japanese. My boy is obsessed with Japanese films and cartoons (even though I’m sure he has no idea what is being said) and my husband has always loved Japanese culture. We are planning to go to Japan in a few years so I would love the app to help us get along 🙂 x

  4. Spanish because my younger sister is learning Spanish at school so I would like to help her.

  5. I’d love to learn Spanish, because my mum moved to Spain 10 years ago and I still don’t know much. I’d love to learn and surprise my mum 🙂

  6. I would choose spanish as I already have a basic knowledge but would love to vastly improve that and be able to fluently speak the language!

  7. French as my daughter speaks it well and I need to catch up with her a bit for when we go over to France on holidays.

  8. Spanish … i’ve always wanted to learn it, but there are so may different dialects, etc …. This would really help me 🙂

  9. I’m about to go on holiday to Germany, so it would be good to learn some basic phrases.

  10. I’d choose German because my daughter wants to learn it, and then we can go on holiday there as well

  11. Spanish, I learned it couple years age, I forget almost everything, but I love Spanish xx

  12. I really want to learn German as I wish to visit Berlin and Munich at some point I hate not being able to talk the lingo

  13. Welsh as ive always wished i knew the language so i can understand my stepdad when hes annoyed he speaks in welsh

  14. I would choose Bengali as my boyfriend’s parents only speak Bengali and would like to learn how to chat with them!

  15. I’m currently trying to learn Nepalese, without much luck! Thsi would be great if it was included!

  16. Forgot to say why…. My other half is Nepalese and would like to be able to talk to the in laws properly! All the resources I have used so far have been pretty bad – it has been quite hard so far

  17. It would be a (very hard) choice between Welsh and Latin-American. I’d choose Welsh for myself as I’ve always wanted to speak my native language, and it would help me help the kids with their welsh homework! Or I’d choose Latin for my daughter, who just today decided she wanted to try and learn it in the six-weeks school holiday.

Thank you for a great opportunity!

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
