Beach vs City

Beach vs City – which would you pick?

I’ve always loved exploring new places and when I was younger there was a constant conflict between Beach vs City when my ex and I planned our holidays.  We both loved to relax on the beach, but I much preferred exploring inland, visiting a city and taking in the sights.

Now of course, I have to consider Monkey and his needs too.  We’ve come to a good compromise for our holiday next year.  We’ll be based in the Algarve in Portugal, in Silves. I get my culture fix and we’re not too far away from the beaches for Monkey.

I love the beaches of the Costa del Sol and Costa Brava, as well as the Balearic Islands. Family friendly, lovely sandy beaches and just perfect for sand castle building.

When Monkey’s a bit older I’d like to go back to Dubai and see how much it’s changed since I last visited.  I can remember having a BBQ on the beach, watching the speed boat racing and looking at the foundations of a hotel that was being built.  That hotel was to become the Burj al Arab!

For a City break, I would love to go back to Paris, it’s one of my favourite places to explore. I adore the architecture and will never tire of looking across the River Seine to the Eiffel Tower at night, sparkling as if encrusted with diamonds in the night sky.  Sevilla is another favourite, it’s so easy to explore and enjoy from the water or by foot.

But there are so many other cities I would love to explore too.  Florence is high on the list, somewhere I never visited with work, but a city that has so much to offer.  I could see myself snapping away with my camera, I’d be in heaven.  I love Italy and would love to return to Milan, to spend some quality time sipping coffee in front of the majestic Duomo di Milano.  It’s a city I fell in love with instantly, and just haven’t spent enough time in.

What would you pick as an ideal destination?  Beach vs City – where would you go?  If you’re struggling for ideas then pop over to Holiday Gems for some inspiration.

  1. Hmm, tricky! I tend to like to combine the two on holiday, like you. A favourite holiday was staying on the Italian coast so we had the beach, but then explored Verona, Venice, The Lakes and Florence, all so beautiful and I want to take the kids back there some day to explore with them, too. Like you, I love Paris and like the idea of having a girly weekend there with my daughter when she’s a little older. I’ve just been looking into going to Rome or Edinburgh, both quite different, but both are cities I’ve yet to visit and am keen to explore x

  2. I think cities are perfect for short breaks or weekend visits but when it comes to a relaxing longer holiday then a beach wins every time (especially if there’s some good diving there too!)

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
