SPAR Wine selection

SPAR Wine selection

My nearest SPAR shop is in Oxford, so it’s not somewhere I’m that familiar with.  It’s been great though, to try out some of the SPAR Wine selection, especially as they are award winning.

I received the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo red wine, Castillo de la Mota Verdejo white wine and Rosé d’Anjou to put to the taste test.

I do love red wine, so this was an obvious first choice for us to try. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an Italian red wine from the Abruzzo region and is priced at £5.50.  This wine was a big hit, it was really smooth and has a hint of blackberries and spice, but nothing too over powering.  We enjoyed this wine over a couple of evenings when warm comfort food was the order of the day.  Toad in the Hole and a Hungarian Goulash dinner tasted even better than normal with a glass of this lovely rich wine.

The Castillo de la Mota Verdejo is a Spanish white wine from Rueda, a region North of Madrid.  It’s normally priced at £7.50 per bottle but is on promotion at £5.50.  Obviously with our Spanish connection I’m always keen to try a new wine from that part of the world. I can certainly imagine sitting with family and friends eating tapas with this wine as an accompaniment.  If the weather was better, this would be my ideal wine to drink with a cold chicken salad or with some baked salmon.  It definitely went well with some Mushroom Ravioli, it’s light and refreshing.

I have to be honest, rosé wine isn’t my wine of choice really.  I much prefer red or white. So I’m definitely no authority, but a friend joined me for dinner recently and she enjoyed a glass of the Rosé d’Anjou with my slow cooked Parmesan Chicken.

This also goes well with the white wine.  The rosé is from the Loire Valley area of France, and is normally priced at £8, but is on promotion at £6.50.  My friend rated this particular wine highly and would buy again.

I’d certainly but the red and white wines from SPAR – they are good quality at a reasonable price, in my opinion.  To see where your nearest store is, just head over to their website.

What’s your favourite meal to pair up with red, white or rosé wines?

disclaimer: we were sent the wines mentioned in exchange for an honest review
