Santa Maria Pulled Pork kit

We enjoy using the Santa Maria range of spices and fajitas are always high up on Monkey’s wish list of dinner time treats. Did you know that they’ve recently launched the Santa Maria Pulled Chicken and Pulled Pork Dinner kits?  Well, never one to shy away from trying something new, I was rather happy when we received the Santa Maria Pulled Pork kit to try out.

I was immediately drawn to the 5 minutes prep time shown on the box!  I’d had a busy day finalising everything for Monkey’s 6th birthday last week and really needed a meal time choice that didn’t involve too much involvement from my side.

The Santa Maria Pulled Pork kit comes with a Pulled Pork Seasoning mix, Easy cook bag and fastener, 8 Mini Tortillas, BBQ sauce and a Red Onion Seasoning mix.  All I needed to provide was the pork – I used a 1kg pork shoulder joint.

The instructions are really easy to follow, I placed my joint inside the bag, along with the Pulled Pork Seasoning mix and 100ml of water.  Fastened the bag and then worked the seasoning over the joint.  I did wonder if I should have removed the fatty side of the joint beforehand, but I left it in place.

The joint was placed in a baking tray, and popped in a preheated 175°C oven for 1½ hours. Simple.

Towards the end of the cooking time, I sliced 2 red onions and placed in a bowl, mixing well with the Red Onion Seasoning mix.  The mix has a salt and lime base so I was a little concerned I might not like it (being rather anti citrus) but actually it was lovely, I was super surprised.

After the 90 minutes cooking time I removed the Pork joint from the oven, let it rest inside the bag for a few minutes before carefully opening the bag and pouring the joint and juices into the baking tray.

I’m not sure if it’s because I left the fatty side of the joint in place during cooking, but the pork wasn’t as easy to pull apart as I would have liked.  But with a little assistance from Daddy P we got the job done and there was plenty of meat and seasoned onions to go round.  The BBQ sauce was flavoursome, but for us we would definitely have preferred the larger size of tortilla wraps.  The mini tortillas obviously hold less contents so if I hadn’t bought additional wraps we’d have had a lot of meat left with nothing to wrap it in.

The meal itself was a hit all round and we will be trying the Pulled Chicken version over the holidays I’m sure.  Both kits are now available in Morrisons for £3.99.
