Fun on a pebble beach

Fun on a pebble beach #CountryKids

My grandparents lived on the Kent coast and I have many happy childhood memories of fun on a pebble beach, but until the October before last Monkey had never seen one. He’d only ever seen sandy beaches and he couldn’t grasp the concept of stones on a beach. We’d been to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and decided to stop off at the seaside on our way back to Dover.  We’d had wonderful sunshine for our trip to Dover Castle the day before, but we were back to more typical October weather on this day!

Strangely we had the beach to ourselves!  I think that tells you that it might not have been the warmest afternoon on record.  But it wasn’t going to stop Monkey having fun on a pebble beach.

What more could a digging obsessed little boy want – a deserted beach, a bucket and spade and a Daddy to boss around!  Time to have fun.

There was treasure to be found all around.

Monkey even discovered some sand whilst having fun on a pebble beach.

The beach might have been free of any other people, but we were under pretty constant surveillance.

We even found time for a little shipwreck and pirate boat spotting along the way, as we were having fun on a pebble beach.

The sun was going down and we were all in need of a hot drink, so we decided it was time to head back to Dover, but we’d had a lovely time, enjoying have the beach all to ourselves.

I wish we lived closer to the seaside so we could enjoy scenes like this more often!

  1. Nothing like a trip to the beach whatever the weather. We used to live close to the sea but not anymore and we miss it. lovely photos x

  2. I now miss the days we lived by the beach – there’s something rather special about a visit off season as Monkey clearly shows here. I’ve promised my two also that next time we’re on the Kent coast I will take them on the RHDR!

  3. There is something fascinating about a pebbly beach esp when it’s a little bit wet and windy! I love your first photos which show the expanse of the beach; the pebbles make great colours. We are possibly in one of the most landlocked parts of the UK, but hubby was brought up by the sea – living somewhere like this is something he always eulogises about!

  4. Mary I am the same as you, always drawn to a beach no matter where it is, some how it reminds me of holidays, even though we live near beaches. Mine are just like Monkey when we visit family in Brighton and play on the pebble beach, it is a novelty after the sandy beaches of Cornwall. It looks like a lovely beach visit and something rather special being the only ones to notice it’s potential on a less than beautiful day. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

  5. I love this time of year when you can have the beach to yourself! I love sand but love a pebbly beach where you can pick up the stones and have fun collecting them.

  6. How lovely to have the beach all to yourselves and Monkey looks like he was having so much fun – there are always lots of things to find on a pebble beach. Most of the beaches near where I grew up were pebble ones so sandy beaches were a novelty to me as a child – I think I might have preferred it the other way round as has been Monkey’s experience though! 🙂

  7. I love Kentish beaches, it’s been a long time since I’ve been (before I had Luke!) but I would love to go back there. I remember when I was little, I hated pebbly beaches! Growing up in Cornwall, I didn’t consider them “proper” beaches, but I think they’re brilliant now. There’s always treasure, as you say, and occasionally you find the sandy spot. 😉 Ray xx #CountryKids
