Family love on Valentines Day

14th February is just around the corner, and it’s a time where love is in the air, red roses might get delivered through doorways and the kids are bound to have made some heart-shaped delight at school for their Mums.  For me, this particular date has always had a slightly different meaning, but one very much based around family love on Valentines Day.

For our family, 14th February has a very special meaning, as my Papa was born on that date in 1902.  His middle name was Valentine, I’ve always wondered whether that sat well with him, as in his adult life he was a Vicar!  I’m sure most people presumed the V stood for Victor.  It’s one of the many conversations I’d wished I’d had with my Papa, but sadly, never had the opportunity, as he died when I was 13. But for the years I had with him, he was always my hero, the giant Papa, who would tirelessly canter round his garden with me on his back, shouting giddy up Papa.  Never complaining, always buying me butterscotch from his local sweet shop. I loved him as a child and have always wished I known him as an adult.

As you all know, I do rather love photography.  I’ve got some photo collages that I created some years ago, that currently hang in our living room.  But this year, I really want to create a photo collage wall running up the wall by our staircase.  I love looking through family photos and with my Papa in mind, decided it was time to buy a new photo frame to house classic shots from the past.

I’ve been a fan of Habitat for years and they now have a small outlet within our local Homebase store, so I headed there earlier in the week to see if I could find a frame that would work for this project.

The photos I have are actually scans from original photos taken when I was a child and earlier still, so they are much smaller than our normal 6×4 prints of today.  As I don’t have the originals, and they obviously are not DSLR quality, I needed to take their size into consideration when mounting them in a frame.

I spotted exactly what I needed right at the entrance to the Habitat section, a photo frame with small holes on the mount, perfect for my photos! The Flossa frame was half price in the sale too, I do love to grab a bargain.

Purchase made, I headed home to add my photos to the frame for a little bit of family love on Valentines Day.  I’m so pleased with the result, and in fact I’m going back to buy a few more frames as it’s the perfect way to display our old family photos.

The wall is looking a little sparse as I need to add frames and print out lots of my favourite digital photos, it’s very much work in progress.  But I love the fact that my Papa is now on view, along with my Granny and even a couple of photos with me in when I was very small.

As Valentines Day approaches how will you remember those you love?  Have you got a photo collage wall?  Any tips?
