Stikbot fun – a review for Brainstorm

We’ve been entertained lately by some very nimble chaps who were launched in the UK last week at Toy Fair by Brainstorm Limited.  We’ve been having some Stikbot fun.

Stikbot selection

The Stikbot is aimed at children aged 4 years and over and comes in a range of six bright colours.  They are multi-positional and come with suction cups on their arms and legs, which are really well secured.

Stikbot fun

The Stikbot is designed to be used as a social media sharing toy – as you can create stop motion videos easily using the free Stikbot app and then upload your finished creation to Youtube and social media channels like Instagram and Facebook.

Position your Stikbot, use the app to take a shot, move the characters slightly and take your next frame.  The screen on your phone shows you a ghost image of where the Stikbot was positioned previously, so you can work out how best to move them. We don’t have a tripod suitable for an iPhone which has made filming a little tricky.  But I’ve noticed that Brainstorm do sell a Stikbot Studio set which does include one, so I can definitely recommend this option.

We’ve found the Stikbot sticks well to glass and they hold their position as we’ve made our shot clips.  They’ve also worked well on our high gloss dining table,  but the suction cups do tend to come unstuck quite easily on some other surfaces.  We’re so new to this concept that it’s a bit of trial and error.

The app is really easy to use, and is available from iTunes and Google Play.  You need to take 10 shots to create 1 second of action.  Once you’ve created your footage you can add music and text, before publishing across social media.

We’ve got a lot to learn about stop motion videos and my 6 year old Monkey needs to learn a bit of patience, but I can see this being an area that we can have lots of Stikbot fun together over the months to come.

If you buy the Stikbot as individual characters they are priced at £9.99, the Stikbot Studio is priced around £15.99 and comes with 2 Stikbot characters and a phone tripod.
