We’re still battling on trying to get Monkey to read home books as well as school books here. He’s taking part in a March into Reading challenge at school and is still insistent that he will only read school books. I live in hope that one day he will pick up a home book and start reading to me, rather than the other way round. One day! The Maverick Early Readers range has been extended and I’m hoping they might work some magic on Monkey.
You may recall that we showcased the first Maverick Early Readers which were released last August. Now there are 5 more books of Early Readers which have been specially adapted from their popular picture books.
Monkey loves his picture book version of Pirates Don’t Drive Diggers so I knew an Early Reader version would be a good step forward for him, even if I’m still doing the reading at the moment!
The Maverick Early Readers work to the recognised colour banding system used in schools. I Wish I’d been Born A Unicorn joins the Green band, Pirates Don’t Drive Diggers and A Gold Star for George join the Orange band, whilst The Four Little Pigs and Grumpy King Colin (known as Cantankerous King Colin in picture book title) join the Turquoise band.
You can see the difference in sentence length and complexity of punctuation through the various bands.

Orange
Turquoise
The Maverick Early Readers range has been extended and these are welcome additions. Priced at £5.99 each, these are a good addition to any bookshelf, and I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate links below for your reference.
