Learning how to play Skylanders SuperChargers with a 6 year old

You all know that we aren’t a techie family and there isn’t a games console in sight in our household. But Monkey will be 7 at the end of the year, I know he plays computer games at school. Perhaps it’s time to try something new at home. We’ve been Learning how to play Skylanders SuperChargers with a 6 year old.  I’ve also learnt that you are never too old to try something new as I tried to keep up!

We recently received the Skylanders SuperChargers Starter set, which works with iPhone, iPad or iPad touch. I thought it would be a great way of introducing us all to a brand I’ve heard a lot about, without the need to invest in a games console. How would we get on? Learning how to play Skylanders SuperChargers with a 6 year old was going to be an interesting experience and Monkey was ready for the challenge.

Skylanders works on the idea of ‘toys to life’ so toys become an integral part of game play, I thought Monkey would enjoy this concept.  With Skylanders SuperChargers this idea is developed further with the introduction of vehicles that can also be brought to life.  Game play now takes place of land, water and in the sky!

The Starter Set comes complete with a Portal of Power, wireless controller that is stored underneath, batteries for both, 2 Skylanders SuperCharger figures, a Skylanders vehicle, poster and character cards (you can also download a free Skylanders Battlecast app) and instructions.  The set also includes batteries for the Portal and controller (5 x AAA).

To play the game you download the free Skylanders SuperChargers app and connect your device to the Portal and controller by blue tooth. You then follow the instructions on-screen to proceed.

Now as we are novice gamers we had no idea what all the buttons and toggle switches on the controller did.  Luckily we were given clues as the game proceeded to help, although some sort of visual guide with the instruction booklet would have been helpful. Learning how to play Skylanders SuperChargers with a 6 year old can be tricky with a mother who is clueless! But over the course of the last couple of weeks, we’ve both improved our game play.

Monkey and I have taken turns through each level to move the Skylanders heroes through the game. We soon realised that when they were ‘getting tired and needed a rest’ that this was a polite way of telling us that our game play skills leave a lot to be desired. Definitely work in progress. At this point you can also buy additional characters to help you.

I’d expected Monkey to get easily frustrated when we were struggling to move through a level, but he wasn’t at all. He was totally focussed on the problem solving aspect of the game. It was interesting to watch him try to figure things out.

As well as using different characters in different terrain you have the ability to modify your vehicles to help complete your missions.

We’ve got a lot to learn about the various characters in the Skylanders game. That’s clear, but it hasn’t stopped the enjoyment. There are in-app purchases where you can buy additional characters for £7.99 a set, but at the moment we’ve not felt the need to add to our armoury of heroes. There are different characters for land, air and sea and ideally you would have at least one for each element to give you optimum game play.  I’m sure in the coming months we will be looking to add characters to the Super Shot Stealth Elf, Spitfire and Hot Streak we have now.

Priced at £14.99 (iPad/iPhone option) the Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Set is a great idea for new gamers like ourselves, it’s portable, and has kept us both entertained.  I also think it’s really good value too.  I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate link below for you.  The starter set is also available in various XBox, Nintendo and Playstation versions.

Learning how to play Skylanders SuperChargers with a 6 year old has been lots of fun, and we look forward to getting better at protecting Skylands in the months ahead.

If you’ve got any tips or guidance, that would be fab!
