Picking a Classic Read with The Folio Society

Picking a Classic Read with The Folio Society

I’ve been a bookworm for as long as I can remember. From my first Ladybird books to Enid Blyton, Astrid Lindgren and Michael Bond, I was hooked.  By my early teens I was heavily into Austen and the Bronte sisters and over the years since, my love of books and reading has never waned.  I’ll read most things but I have to admit that I really haven’t touched on American literature at all.  It was time to change that and I was offered the chance of picking a classic read with The Folio Society.

I decided it was high time that I read something by Truman Capote and so opted for Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I was in for a real treat when my hardback book arrived in a sleeve for added protection, as well as coming with a new bookmark.  Don’t ever fold the page of a book over in my presence, my toes may curl!

Picking a Classic Read with The Folio Society is something any book lover would enjoy. These are books to be treasured, whether you opt for some classical English literature, a Children’s book like Alice in Wonderland, or something from Stephen King or Terry Pratchett.  All bases are covered.

I’m so pleased with my choice.  The Folio Society editions include illustrations or photographs, and for Breakfast at Tiffany’s the book is illustrated throughout by Karen Klassen.  They work really well in my opinion.

This edition includes a biography of both the author and illustrator as well as Jay Mcinerney, who provides a really interesting introduction to Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

So what did I think of the book itself?  I knew nothing of it beforehand, I’ve not even seen the Audrey Hepburn film (I have no idea why not) so I didn’t know that the story had originally been written as a novella for Esquire magazine.  Holly Golightly is certainly an interesting character and I enjoyed Capote’s writing style.  It’s an easy and entertaining read. You do end up rather rooting for her and hoping she did make a new life for herself somewhere in the world.

If you are ever looking for a present for someone who loves books then I can really recommend The Folio Society and their collection.  They even have a shop in London, that I really should visit the next time I’m in the city.  This particular book sells for £27.95, the quality of the printing and binding speaks for itself.  It’s a bargain.
