I’ve had a bit of a wake up call over the last 4 months about taking better care of my eyelids. Back in November I developed a chalazion on the middle of my left eyelid. It’s been causing me all sorts of problems ever since, and I’m currently waiting for an appointment at our regional eye hospital in March, to see what more can be done to get rid of it.
A chalazion is basically a bacterial infection and I’ve probably been guilty of not removing my mascara as well as I should have been. I use make up remover but it’s likely that I haven’t actually been cleaning my eyelids as effectively as I could have been.
My chalazion seems to have a life of its own. It’s come up on my eyelid and formed as a ball shape that then bursts, can sit above my eyelashes as a little red lump, that only I’m really aware of, or can just be visible under my eyelashes. I certainly got more than I bargained for on Monkey’s 7th birthday in December, when the chalazion gave me quite a surprise.
Thankfully a hot compress at the time managed to reduce the swelling and we could enjoy our weekend away. But clearly everything I’d tried hadn’t worked.
So while I’m waiting for medical intervention I’m making use of a couple of products that I’ve been introduced to. Not only will they help keep my chalazion in check, but they are things that I’ll also be making use of in the future as I start taking better care of my eyelids.
My new daily regime starts with the Biotrue® Daily Eyelid Wipes from Bausch + Lomb. The wipes are specifically designed to use on the eyelid, and are preservative and detergent free. They are suitable for both sensitive eyes and can be used by babies right through to adulthood. It’s recommended to use one wipe per eye, especially in my case, so as not to risk any spread of infection.
Priced at £9.99 for a pack of 20, these wipes are available in pharmacies, opticians and online. The handy sachets make them easy to pop into my handbag, so it doesn’t matter if I’m travelling, I can still take the time to look after my eyelids from now on.
I’m continuing my new eyelid care routine with the TheraPearl Eye-Essential Mask. The mask can be used either by heating in the microwave or chilling prior to use. As well as helping with eye infections, it can be used to aid migraines and for general well being. The mask is reuseable and the flexible beads within it means that it moulds comfortably to the contours of your face when you wear it. I’ve been trying it for 20 minutes at a time and it is so relaxing. I’m also finding it easier to work with than the hot flannel compress I’ve been using since my issues started.
This eye mask is priced at £7.99 and can be found in Superdrug.
Now in my case, I’m clearly reacting to something that’s already happened, but you could prevent any issues in the first place. I’d much rather not be looking at a minor operation to restore my eyelid to its former glory. I wish I’d discovered these products earlier, and they are certainly helping to reduce the problems I’ve been having.
