Snowdrop Spotting at Welford Park

Snowdrop Spotting at Welford Park

I’ve been joining in with the Country Kids linky over with Coombe Mill for over 3 and half years now.  I love seeing where other people have visited both at home and abroad.  It’s also a great place to get inspiration for future visits and nature ideas I can use at home with Monkey.  Last Saturday I was looking through the posts on the linky, when one particularly caught my eye.  I’d already shared our snowdrop post from Evenley Wood Garden, and there was another post from Renovation Bay-Bee from somewhere I’ve been meaning to visit for at least a year.  I checked my diary, we had a free day the next day, right Daddy P, we’re taking Monkey Snowdrop Spotting at Welford Park tomorrow.

Snowdrop Spotting at Welford Park is possible from Wednesday-Sunday until the end of next weekend.  Close to Newbury, I have to say, that it’s really worth a visit, if you can get there.  There’s plenty of free parking and entrance costs £6 for adults and £2 for children aged 4-15 (cash only). You might also recognise the grounds if you’re a fan of The Great British Bake Off.

We queued for a few minutes before we paid and Monkey received the map of the grounds.  It was time to explore.

We decided to head to the side of the Queen Anne period house to look at the rose garden and wild garden areas of the grounds first.  We passed the family pet cemetery and saw a couple of unusual inhabitants as we went.

Monkey loves giraffes, so the statues were a big hit.  Snowdrop Spotting at Welford Park had got off to a good start. Although there weren’t the variety of different types of snowdrops that we’d seen the week before, it really didn’t matter.  We were still in for some visual delights.

The River Lambourn runs through the Welford Park estate and it just adds to the charm of the place.

Monkey was just loving an afternoon of Snowdrop Spotting at Welford Park and of course it wasn’t long before sticks had been found to enjoy the adventure with.

In one who reads my blog knows that Monkey loves sticks with a passion.  We could probably make a few wonderful miniature dens with the amount of sticks that are sitting outside our front door.  Feathers also seem to be a bit of a hit at the moment.  Another love of my son, bridges.  Whether he’s being a bridge troll, playing pooh sticks or just admiring the view, a bridge is always a draw.  Welford Park wasn’t going to disappoint on that level either.

Spending time with his Dad on Sundays is always special for my 7-year-old.  It’s the one time of the week that they really have a few hours of quality time together.

Monkey loves giving his Dad a running commentary of what they’re looking at, and where they’re going.  His my little nature detective and is always pointing out different things to Daddy P.

We soon reached the Snowdrop Beach Woods and all three of us just went ‘Wow’.  Honestly, the photos just don’t do the area justice.  It truly looked like a woods covered in snow.  It was a beautiful sight.

The views were just wonderful, it was certainly worth the drive, and I’m so pleased we got to see the snowdrops in all their glory.

It’s also lovely to see my 7-year-old really enjoy the beauty of such little flowers.  He’s enjoyed our last few outings as much as I have.  He really is a nature lover, in all it’s forms. He did make me laugh though, as he’s already asking when we’ll see bluebells.

Have you been out spotting snowdrops this week?

  5. Ooh I can’t wait for bluebells, although there aren’t really any near us apart from the sides of the roads!

  6. That is a seriously impressive spread of snowdrops!! Despite a mild February, the snowdrops are only – just – appearing now in my hilltop village in Luxembourg. Their appearance is one of my favourite events of the year, bringing hope of spring to a long central European winter. My whole family would have loved this park – thanks for the inspiration!!

  7. How lovely that Monkey is such a nature lover. He looks like he was having a wonderful time. Sticks are popular with my girls too. Those snowdrops are so pretty – I can imagine it looked like a carpet of snow 🙂 #CountryKids

  8. Oh my goodness that’s stunning!! Shame it’s only open for a little while longer. I am putting this on my list for next year! I had no idea they filmed GBBO here, even more reason for a visit. Stunning photos and great Monkey got to spend time with his Daddy. #countrykids
