Become The Gruffalo Spotter with The Forestry Commission #GruffaloSpotters

Have you heard that you can become The Gruffalo Spotter with The Forestry Commission?  No?  Well read on. They’ve teamed up with Magic Light Productions to offer an augmented reality app, bringing the story of The Gruffalo alive within their deep, dark woods and forests. So if you go down to the woods today, you certainly will be in for a surprise.

The free app is available on iTunes, Amazon Underground and Google Play and can be used exclusively at the 26 Forestry Commission sites across England, having launched last month. Also worth noting that there are no in-app purchases. If, like us you have iPhones then you need to be running iOS 8 and later on iPhone (5s and above), iPad Air and iPad Air 2 to get the full experience. Download the app and then check out your nearest Forestry Commission trail to have lots of outdoors fun.

We should have been going to Wendover Woods on Saturday to try out the app for ourselves, but sadly had to change our plans.  But I know we’ll either be there or at Salcey Forest soon, as we become The Gruffalo Spotter with The Forestry Commission.

Using The Gruffalo Spotter app you can follow 5 clues on an interactive trail and track the signs of the various characters from this wonderful story.  We went to see The Gruffalo Live down in London a while back and since then, Monkey’s favourite character is the snake, so I’m sure we’ll be hunting him down on our next visit.

The trail is self led and will include lots of information points along the way.  Once you find the characters you use the app to bring the 3D animation to life.  You can even take your photograph with them, and the photos will save to your device gallery. Remember to use the #GruffaloSpotters hashtag if you share on social media so you can see everyone’s adventures. Kids are going to love this.

To add to the experience you can also purchase a Gruffalo Spotters kit at the cafe or visitor centre at participating sites for £3.00.  These include animal facts and tips for tracking wildlife, an evidence collection bag, stickers, a magnifying glass and a pencil to make a note of your forest finds!

We’re hoping to become The Gruffalo Spotter with The Forestry Commission very soon, so keep an eye out for my social media photos in the weeks ahead.

disclosure:  we were sent a Gruffalo Spotters kit and a goody bag in exchange for this post.  My thoughts still remain my own honest opinions
