I’ve just dropped Monkey off at school for his first day in Year One, he faces a number of challenges this year and getting to grips with reading is top of the agenda.  He loves books as do I, but has always been far keener for me to read to him, than to read for himself. We’ve had a very clear distinction between books he brings home from school that he ‘has’ to read, and every other book in the world which Mummy ‘must’ read to him.  I’m hoping that may change as Maverick Arts Publishing launch an Early Readers range.  The first five books published in the series are based on some of his favourite picture books.

The books were published last month, and Monkey recognised them all instantly as they use the same artwork as the original picture books, but have been edited to fit the ‘book banding’ system used within schools, with the help of a consultant.

The books are split into 3 of the reading book bands – Green, Orange and Turquoise, aimed at children aged 5-7.

Yuck! Said the Yak, by Alex English, is banded Green, stage 5 – aimed at children aged 5-6.

Children reading this band are getting used to punctuation and there are up to 4 sentences per page.

You can read my review of the picture book version of Yuck! Said the Yak here.  This is the easiest of the new Early Readers from Maverick Books and there is a lot of repetition.  This is a real favourite of Monkey’s and although he wouldn’t try to read every word, he knows the story well enough to try a few of them, especially Yuck! What a surprise.

A Scarf and a Half by Amanda Brandon

and The Black and White Club by Alice Hemming

are both in the Orange book band, stage 6 reads.

Both offer some more complex punctuation and longer sentences.  Monkey’s isn’t at the stage of being able to read these fluently yet, but again, they are stories he recognises and there is certainly more willingness to try!  I’ve linked both of my full reviews above for you, so you can get an idea of both stories.

An absolute favourite story here is Hocus Pocus Diplodocus by Steve Howson – anything with a dinosaur always gets Monkey’s attention.  We loved this book when we reviewed the picture book.

Regular readers will also remember that Monkey loves Rhinos, so Preposterous Rhinoceros by Tracy Gunaratnam has been another story well read here.

These are the hardest of the Early Reader series – banded Turquoise, level 7.

These books are aimed at children aged 6-7. The sentences can be more complex and children will already be reading quite well. Again, Monkey isn’t at this reading stage, but I’m reading these books to him, rather than the picture books and in time, I have no doubt, he will read them to me.

I love the idea of adapting picture books that are already well-loved, into early readers.  It’s a great way of encouraging children, especially those more reluctant self readers to try. Priced at £5.99 each I can thoroughly recommend for anyone joining the road to reading journey.  I’ve included my Amazon affiliate links below for your reference.

disclaimer:  we were sent these books in exchange for an honest review
