Treasured possessions

I think it’s fairly obvious to any reader of this blog that I LOVE books, I have felt the same way all my life, and will do my best to pass the passion on to my son.  Daddy P doesn’t read anything – tut, tut!

As an adult, I have tended to hoard all my books and then read them again years later.  Our spare room is really my personal library, but I have decided to start sifting through the books I have, to make way for my son’s ever-expanding collection.

Whilst sorting through one shelf I re-discovered some treasured possessions from my childhood. Firstly, two Paddington Bear Books and Children of the New Forest.  These lovely Puffin Books had belonged to my Uncle (who passed on his passion for books) and he gave them to me in 1977 when I was 9 years old.  They have been well-read and well-loved.

Secondly, a Scholastics book called High Country Adventure that I picked at the end of my time at my First School, which has been signed by all the school teachers, the headmaster and even the caretaker. I would have been 8-9 so again I’ve had this book since 1976-7.  Another treasured possession.

I don’t suppose that there is any monetary value to any of these books, but to me, they are totally priceless possessions 🙂 and bring back lots of memories from my childhood.

  1. I love reading too. I just wish I had more time to read books. I make up for it in blogs though LOL. I had managed to keep two books from my childhood that I have given to Z to read. They were both written by James Herriot and I love them because they were stories about animals. The kids have a huge collection of books but I always say you can never have too many books!!

  2. those are lovely! I haven’t kept any books from my childhood but ones that I remember i am meaning to go and buy again so I can read it to my boys. i think going to start with magic far away tree, cos ive told my 4 yr old about that from what i can remember and he finds it really exciting. although don’t know if it will seem so old fashioned now when we it read again

    1. I don’t know that one, I’ll have to investigate now. There are some gem’s out there, but also for me Julia Donaldson books didn’t exist when I was little so they’ve been a wonderful discovery for us.

  3. It is the same in our house – me and the children love books, Daddy hasn’t got the concentration to sit down and read unless it has pictures!! 😉 I still have books from my childhood that I have passed on to Little Mr A now, they are great memories.

    1. We’re trying to educate my husband but it’s slow progress! Unfortunately virtually all of my childhood books were given away at some point by my parents when we moved. Such a shame as I had loads of Ladybird Books etc.

  4. We have an awful lot of books – including some I kept from my childhood, it’s been lovely to get them out and put them on shelves for the children to pick through – some things I’ve kept out of their hands though 😀

  5. We have lots of books and I have some special books from my childhood too. I came across an illustrated edition of Wind in the Willows in a box at my parents’ house recently and have brought it home. Can’t wait to read it to Bud and Little Miss.

  6. I recently discovered my old illustrated copy of The Wind in the Wilows in a box at my parents’ house. I rescued it and brought it home, I can’t wait to read it to Bud and Little Miss.

  7. That’s lovely! Fantastic that you have your old childhood books. Mine are long-gone! Like you I am avid reader and love of my books. My husband never reads and thinks it’s boring and pointless! I’m pleased to say all my kids have inherited my love of reading 🙂

  8. I love books but struggle to find the time to read them now. I love the selection of books you have from your childhood and think it will be lovely when Monkey is old enough to read them. I have several classic books from when I was about 12/14 that I loved that I hope Miss M will enjoy one day.

  9. I love books, recently i downsized my collection, but there are some books you will always keep aren’t there! You have made some really finds there, proper treasure!

  10. With you on the Paddington. I really loved those books. Do you expect/hope Monkey will like the same books? I know I shouldn’t be, but I was so disappointed when J didn’t like Wind in the Willows (and am hoping he’ll grown into it).

    1. I hope he likes Paddington, I never got into Winnie the Pooh but he seems to love it. I would just be happy if he continues to love reading once he starts school 🙂
