Shumba’s Big Adventure – A book review for Orion Star AD sent for review

disclosure:  we were sent this book for the purpose of review, our comments, however, remain our own honest thoughts.

As you may remember we recently reviewed a couple of books from Orion Book’s Early Reader range.  Obviously, my son is too young at 3 and a half to be reading by himself, but I read a variety of books to him, from simple board books to the Plant Locator magazine!

He enjoyed the last two books so much I was really pleased to receive another story in the range to read to him – Shumba’s Big Adventure – written by Lauren St John, with illustrations by Lorna Hussey.

This is a lovely tale of a mischievous little lion cub called Shumba.  He is always getting into trouble and being naughty.  His big adventure starts when he doesn’t listen to his mother and decides to go near the road.

He gets caught and put in a cage on a ship sailing to England with a lot of other lovely wild animals.

There is so much to discuss in this little story, my son loves wild animals from his many visits to Whipsnade Zoo and the like.  He sat intently listening to Shumba’s adventures.  Would he and his animal friends be rescued?  Would they make it back to their homeland?

The watercolour illustrations really help with the storytelling, and although he is way too young to read this story himself, he sat and listened to the entire story.  I can see him progressing over the years to come to learning words and then the whole story himself.  This is another lovely story from a great series of Early Reader books.

Wild animal lovers might also be interested to know that the author is giving 100% of her royalties to the Born Free Foundation.
