disclosure: we were sent a camera for the purpose of entry into this competition
This is my son’s entry in the Kids Capture the Colour #KIDSCTC competition. My words – his images. Any reader of this blog will have gathered by now that I love taking photos – my posts are normally peppered with my shots – I take hundreds of them. Digital cameras were made for me, can you imagine how much money I used to spend on films and developing when I’d go away for 3 weeks. On one trip to Thailand, I used 8 x 36 exposure films just in the Grand Palace. Life is so much easier now – take a photo, check it, delete it then and there if no good.
My first camera, was my Mum’s hand me down Brownie 127, just look at this photo. I remember it vividly, it had a brown cord to hang around my neck and came in a brown canvas carry case. It was big, especially for a 6-7-year-old.
Of course, back in the dark ages of my childhood, you had to point, click, roll on (no auto wind-on even) and hope that your picture would come out ok. Needless to say, when your film was turned into photos and returned to you in the post, they’d be out of focus and would feature a range of headless humans and animals. But still, my love of photography began. I moved onto a Kodak Instamatic and never looked back.
So how wonderful for my little boy, who will be 4 in December, that his very first camera IS a digital camera! He can point, click, display and delete or keep then and there. Great for an impatient little boy to see an instant result.
This little camera is brilliant for him – it’s very lightweight and has a decent size display so he can look at his photos easily. He mastered the on/off switch very quickly and is getting to grips with displaying his photo’s. We haven’t really bothered with the zoom feature as I think it’s just too much for him to take in – we’ve just concentrated on him holding the camera steady and taking his own photos – whatever he likes, whenever he likes. It’s great, it doesn’t matter if he takes a million awful photos – it’s not costing anything to process, is it!
So, we’ve been set the Kids Capture the Colour challenge by Travel Supermarket – capture the colours of red, blue, green, yellow and white.
Over to my son and his photographic skills; as I’ve already mentioned, he will be 4 in December this year. He’s taken quite a few photo’s and we’ve loaded them on to the computer and these are the one’s he has picked himself. I also want to point out that he held the camera himself and clicked the shutter himself too – I’m impressed, there are some stinkers but overall there are some lovely little shots for him to be proud of…
Red
He loves vehicles – you will see a theme emerging through this post! This is part of his train set which regularly winds its way around our living room. As you can see he has one rogue carriage with bright RED wheels captured here, along with his knee!
Blue
The sky is BLUE Mummy! This was taken on our recent trip to track down his beloved Super Guppy, also shown in this photo with a BLUE stripe. I think this is a blooming impressive photograph for a nearly 4-year-old to have taken in his first week as a budding photographer. He loves this plane and was so excited to be able to take his own photo’s of it – I loved watching him.
Green
Well, what more can I say! The grass is certainly GREEN! This was also taken on our day trip to meet the Super Guppy, I’m not terribly sure if this was a deliberate shot or a mistake – but it’s in focus!
Yellow
This sums him up – he loves his diggers, loaders and bulldozers – all of them are YELLOW. These are two from his beloved collection. He also loves to see how things work, especially as these light up and move – I have an engineer in the making.
White
I told you that you’d see a theme to this post! This WHITE aeroplane featured in our #my99psummer posts and he loves it. He’s worn the battery out completely so it doesn’t light up or make noise any more – he doesn’t care. He imagines that this plane is taking him to see his Granny and Gramps in Spain.
**************
It would be lovely to win this competition, but to be honest, it really doesn’t bother me if he doesn’t win. I don’t expect it, with an upper age of 15 – I’m sure there will be some really cracking shots out there. This competition has given him the opportunity to OWN his own camera, a decent camera, before his 4th birthday. I was a bit worried he’d wreck it on the first day, but no, he loves using it, he loves to be behind the camera instead of constantly having his photo taken by me. We compare our photos – Super Guppy to Super Guppy. If this competition has fuelled a passion for photography in my young son, then that is priceless, and more than I could ever hope for.

Just as a total aside, this was the 3rd photo he ever took …..
well done Monkey, great pics
Thank you – I think he did brilliantly really
Gorgeous pictures and I agree, it’s a really kid friendly camera! Hopefully my little man will get the photography bug soon – right now he’s far more into just switching it on and off. 😀
I think I spend so much time taking photo’s he was glad to have the ‘power’ for a change and do his own thing. Great little camera – ideal for kids. Don’t get me wrong – we enjoying turning it on and off a lot too 🙂
Great pictures, and I love the yellow one very abstract. Good luck Monkey! 🙂
Bless him, I love that one too! I was just chuffed he got some in focus all by himself 🙂
well done Monkey!! great pictures xx
Thanks – I think he’s done rather well for his age.
Monkey has taken some great photos! We are doing this too and Little Mr A loves his camera, he takes it everywhere with him. Good luck in the competition 😀
I’m so proud of him, I honestly thought that they would all be totally rubbish, and there are some bad ones – but some of them are blooming brilliant for his age, but weren’t relevant for the competition and all totally his own work. Good luck too 🙂
he has done so well, they look great! Mr Z is loving his camera too, still need to go and have a proper look through all his shots
I’m so pleased, really thought they’d all be awful. He loves using it
These are brilliant! He’s done a great job 🙂 We’ve got our photos, I just haven’t written the post yet…that reminds me! Thank you so much for linking to PoCoLo x
My first camera was a bit like that. I love the photos, he obviously had fun
He thinks he’s the bees knees know he can take his own photos.
