Remembering in London

Remembering in London

My Country Kids post for this week was going to be another post from our trip to Spain.  But then we saw something when we were Remembering in London last Sunday, which made me change my mind.  Something that reminded me that nature is everywhere, even right in the centre of London.

Remembering in LondonWe’d been to an event at Hamleys in the morning, had lunch and wanted to visit the Cenotaph.  It was an emotional time for me anyway, as regular readers of the blog will know, I had a few reasons for Remembering in London last weekend.

It was a lovely afternoon, so we put our tube tickets away and walked from Shaftesbury Avenue down to Whitehall, down to the Cenotaph.  Just before we reached the Cenotaph itself I could see a lot of people standing by a patch of grass taking photographs.  What was that all about?  My son and I set off to investigate.  What was everyone so fascinated by?

This little chap – who wondered what all the fuss was about!

I’m pretty sure it was the first time my son had seen a fox for real, not a fox from the Gruffalo.  There was the fox, sitting in Whitehall, in charge of all he surveyed, as cool as a cucumber.  Looking at all of us, wondering what all the fuss was about.  It was funny, it was a little surreal.  He was fascinated.

We said goodbye to Mr Fox and walked over to the Cenotaph.  I have to say it was a very moving experience, looking at all of the wreaths, rather than seeing the pictures on TV, being there for real.  Whitehall with no traffic was a new experience too. We spent some time remembering in London.  I’m glad we did, I was remembering more than just the fallen, I was a little lost in my thoughts of an angel on a cloud, a poppy that never flowered.

My son was just intrigued by everything.  We’re at the Why, Where, How stage.  I like it, I spent so long waiting for him to talk, right now he can fire questions at me as much as he likes.  Lust for knowledge, a thing to be encouraged.

We stumbled upon a wreath-laying ceremony in Horse Guards Parade, the brass band played, then men marched.  It was thought-provoking for all of us.  Something different.

We walked back to the train station, a day of remembering in London was over, a different kind of day out.  My son’s first fox sighting, something to be remembered.  Out and about in our capital city.

  1. wow the atmosphere must have been amazing if not mixed with a little saddness too. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a fox that close.

  2. How amazing and bold to see the fox there. It looks like it was a very emotional and an unforgettable day. The photos are great and I’m sure Monkey enjoyed the sights of London. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.
