disclosure: we were sent this book for the purpose of review
Day 7 of the 12 Days of Christmas books series. Today’s book is called Alfie’s Christmas, which is written by Shirley Hughes and published by Random House.
As soon as I saw this hardback book pop through the letterbox, I was transported back to 2009. I was pregnant with my little boy and working, we’d had a book delivery to look through and one of the girls in the office came running over to me. Mary, you have to buy this for ‘bump’! It was a collection of Shirley Hughes stories. Being of a certain age, I hadn’t heard of Shirley Hughes, Alfie or Dogger, they all came as I was leaving school. Needless to say, I bought the collection and loved it. I’ve been reading Shirley Hughes stories to Monkey from birth!
Alfie’s Christmas is a 30-page hardback book that follows Alfie on his journey to Christmas Day. He’s counting down the days with his advent calendar, he’s making Christmas cookies and helps put up the Christmas tree.
My son loves the Alfie character, he’s old enough this year to really grasp what Christmas is about himself. We’ve already talked about advent calendars and decorations, we have plans for our own cookies and he has bought a decoration for our tree already. He can really relate to Alfie’s Christmas.
Alfie’s Christmas, like other Shirley Hughes stories, are the kind, that I can read to him, but that one day he will want to read to me. It’s a book which I can see being well-read every Christmas. A tradition, I like that idea.
If you want a book about family, being together and all the preparations for Christmas, then Alfie’s Christmas is for you and your family. It will leave you with that warm and cosy feel, it’s a lovely read, with great illustrations.
Can you tell that we’re fans?
Sounds like a great book. Never heard of Shirley Hughes but it sounds like a fantastic collection.
