Boats and Planes

Boats and Planes

Last Sunday we visited the London Boat Show with Monkey.  He loved it, in fact he was in heaven really. We’d had a lovely time looking at all sorts of marine craft, most of course, that we could never afford in a million years!  To end the day we decided to explore Victoria Docks a little before the rain set in.  Boats and Planes, and a very happy Monkey.

The Boat Show was held at Excel London, right in the heart of Docklands, along Victoria Docks.  There has been much regeneration there over the last 15 years, especially with the London Olympics too. It’s an area we’ve not explored before.

The Royal Victoria Dock Bridge was calling.

So off we went ….

Boats and PlanesThe Royal Victoria Docks Bridge is right by Excel and we’d been looking at it when we visited the outside exhibits at the Boat Show.  There is something else very close to Excel – London City Airport.  Boats AND Planes! All in one day.  We’d seen planes fly overhead, but even I didn’t realise just how close we were to the airport.

We walked to the top of the bridge and we could see the London City Airport Runway, right in front of us. Our view was of boats and planes.  Monkey was not for moving!

We spent ages looking at the planes taking off and landing, it is a far busier little airport than we thought.  We watched the people walking around the outside of the boat show, we pointed out the London city landmarks, the O2 and the Emirates Air Line.  We decided to walk down to the cable car station, just to watch the cable cars going round and round.

Boats and Planes Boats and Planes Boats and PlanesMonkey was fascinated, but we decided to save a trip for another time, when he’s a bit older.  He’s got a lot braver these last few months, but I’m really not sure that he’s ready for cable cars just yet.

Boats and Planes wore my little Monkey out!

  1. What a fantastic day out! Perfect 🙂 I haven’t been in Docklands for years, and I’m not sure I’ve been to Excel… But I have flown in and out of City, not for the faint hearted!

  2. Oh my have those docks changed! I remember going there as part of a geography field trip rather a long time ago, unrecognisable now. A great idea for a family day out. So which boat did you have your heart set on?

  3. Now that’s a great day out in London. I’ve always wanted to go to the boat show and now I know I can take the kids with me and we’ll all have a perfect day out.

  4. I’ve never done that stretch of the river. I love a stroll along South Bank with the kids – so much for them to see, but we’ll have to try this one too. I’ve heard the cable cars are worth doing.
    Love how zonked he is!

  6. Looks like lots of interesting fun, you dont get the scale of the boats I suppose from my perspective – but I bet they were overwhelmingly huge!

Love the train photo at the end haha. Bless him!
