Mr Monkey and the Birthday Party

Mr Monkey and the Birthday Party – a book review

Orion Books have recently added another Red Early Reader to their range.  Mr Monkey and the Birthday Party was published on 6th March.

Mr Monkey and the Birthday PartyMr Monkey and the Birthday Party is written by Linda Chapman and illustrated by Sam Hearn.  Through the 61 pages of this cheeky little story, we learn all about Mr Monkey, the soft toy.  Mr Monkey has been at school for many years, and lives in Class 2.  Every week a different child from the class gets to take him home.  They have to keep a diary of the fun things they get up to.

This week there is a new girl in school called Anya, and Miss Preston picks her to look after Mr Monkey.  She’s rather excited, but little does she know, Mr Monkey is magic.  She really is in for an exciting week.

Now poor Anya wants to fit in with her new class, but she has a problem.  Rachel has invited everyone to her birthday, it’s a swimming party. The girls are going to be in the big pool. Poor Anya confides in Mr Monkey on the way home, she can’t swim.  She doesn’t want the other girls to laugh at her.

Now, with my fear of water I could totally relate to Mr Monkey and the Birthday Party, and it lead on to lots of chat with my Monkey about his, and my swimming lessons.

What can Anya do?  Well Mr Monkey jumps into action.  He comes alive and tells Anya that he can help, with a little help from some Strawberry Jam, his favourite food.  After the shock, Anya gets the jam and Mr Monkey comes up with a plan.

Mr Monkey and the Birthday PartyMr Monkey and the Birthday Party is a magical tale of overcoming fears, helped along with some great swimming lessons from dolphins.  If only I’d had that as a child!

We’ve really enjoyed this story, both Monkey and I are having swimming lessons, and this book has been a great little talking point.

disclaimer:  we were sent this book in exchange for an honest review.
