The First Day at School

Like so many of your children, Monkey will be starting school in a few weeks time.  Eek! Where are the summer holidays disappearing to?  Full time school – how is that possible?  It’s fair to say that Monkey is a little anxious about the move from his Nursery class to Reception.  Although he knows the teacher, area, and the majority of his class mates already, it’s still change.  He doesn’t do change.  When I heard about The First Day at School personalised books; I knew that I had to investigate further.

The First Day at School personalised books are available from the lovely online retailer Born Gifted for £11.99 (free delivery).  You select the name you want to feature in your book (up to 12 characters) and you cal also add a personalised message to the title page covering 2 lines of text, 40 characters per line.  Then just wait up to 3 working days for your personalised copy of The First Day at School to arrive.

The First Day at School

The First Day at School is an A4 paperback book with 22 pages of personalised text and illustrations.  Monkey loves personalised books and was excited to sit down and see what happened in this book. ‘Monkey’ is a bunny who is going to start school, he’s very nervous and isn’t looking forward to his first day at school.

The First Day at School

We follow the bunny as his Mummy and Daddy take him to school, show him his named peg for his coat and where the toilets are (this will be very important for one son to get to grips with!).

I loved the feel of this story as it mirrors Monkey’s reactions in so many ways.  We follow ‘Monkey’ through his first day, we meet his teacher Miss Fox and the other children in his class.  The book talks about Assembly and meeting the Head Master and about the fun things the children do during the day.  Your child’s name features throughout the story itself as well as in the illustrations.  For example, you see a painting that the child has done with his name on it.

As the day goes on, Monkey is feeling a little less nervous, he’s making friends and having fun. There’s even a page about school dinners; a subject we’re all feeling a little nervous about in this house.

At the end of The First Day at School, Monkey is met by his parents and wants to know if he can go back again the next day.

This is a lovely way of talking through the process of starting school with children. We’ve read this book every day for the last week, we’ve adapted the teacher’s name to match Monkey’s teacher. After each page we’ve talked about the things we know will happen at Monkey’s school and offered lots of reassurance.

I’m sure we’ll still have a few issues on 3rd September, but I really thing The First Day at School has already helped with some of Monkey’s reservations.

  1. What a lovely idea for a book. I am sure many children are anxious on their first day at school and can see something like this really helping to calm their nerves.
