Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry

Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry – a review for Tomy

August saw Tomy launch the new Big Works range aimed at children from 3-8 years of age.  The series currently consists of a Dump Truck, Cement Lorry Mixer and the Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry.  All are scaled to 1:16 of the actual vehicles. Monkey has been fascinated by our weekly bin collections for a couple of years so I knew he’d love this delivery.

I don’t know about you but scale ratio’s don’t mean a great deal to me (I’m no fan of Maths!) What I can tell you is that the Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry is certainly big.  Now we’ve received this toy I can certainly more clearly understand the £39.99 price tag.  It’s considerable bigger than anything else Monkey has.  It’s dimensions are approx 60cm l x 21cm h x 16cm w, so something to consider if space is at a premium.

There’s been a bit of thought with the packaging for the The Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry.  Yes it is securely packaged but part of the packaging can be turned into a play scene which is a great way of recycling. Although Monkey discarded this fairly early on, other children might like this idea more.

There are lights and sound features – two button on top of the cab will make the warning lights flash and the head lights come on.  The engine can be revved and reversing sounds can be heard.

The knob on the top of the Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry raises and lowers the loader so you can empty your rubbish from the bin into the compactor.

The knob on the side allows you to move the compactor inside.  Monkey loved this feature. He is nearly 5 years old and the knobs are a perfect size for little hands.  Big enough to turn easily, sturdy enough not to get broken.

The dustbin can be removed from the bracket at the back of the lorry, the lid hinges as it tips up.  My one concern with this item is the strength of the attachment bar to the lorry.  I can already see stress points on both sides of this bracket, so I wonder how long it will be before this snaps.  Obviously when that happens, Monkey will lose a lot of the functionality of the toy.  If you can’t secure the rubbish bin to the lorry to tip it up, I can see problems ahead with that.

Both driver doors open and the side mirrors can be pulled in when parking up for the night!

Monkey has also tested our the seats and as you can see a Playmobil figure fits really well in the cab.  We’ve had Lego dustbin men too.

These parts all seem quite sturdy and have survived rigorous play over the last month! The front axle also moves so Monkey can feel that he is actually steering this beast of a machine around the living room.

So what does he think of it?  He loves it.  Can’t you tell!  He even lines his new Big Works IVECO Rubbish Collection Lorry up with his other rubbish lorries at the end of a busy day so they can keep each other company.

It’s a hit with Monkey and if you are starting to think of ideas for Christmas then this might just fit the bill.  The range is available from a number of retailers including Amazon (my affiliate link below takes you straight to the page).

  1. That does look fun, but boy is it big! I think my son would be tempted to actually try that outside like a ‘real’ one. My husband explained scale to me the other day when we were researching presents for my youngest-I get it now, I think 🙂

  2. Oh, this range is sure to be a hit with my Little Man! I’m thinking wait another year though with what you’ve said about attachments being secure – things have to be very robust for him not to break and snap them!

  3. That looks amazing! So much detail and it’s huge! The Little A’s have a cousin who I know would love this.

  4. What a fantastic toy – I know my big 2 would love this. Love the idea of the reuseable packaging too. Thanks for linking up with #TriedTested
