Monkey returns to Warwick Castle

Monkey returns to Warwick Castle #CountryKids

I moved to North Oxfordshire with my parents and brother in the early 1980’s.  One of the most memorable places that we visited was Warwick Castle which wasn’t too far away from where we lived. For a history fanatic like myself it was like walking straight into a history book.  My love affair with Warwick Castle began.  I’ve been many times over the years, and you may remember that Monkey and I visited last month for a Mike the Knight event.

Monkey returns to Warwick CastleI’ve been meaning to write more about our visit ever since, but I was holding on until I could finally access my photo library.Yes, finally I have my old computer back up and running and I’ve bought an external hard drive to back up my photos.

Monkey first visited Warwick Castle in September 2011, my parents were visiting from Spain with our friend CC.  It was CC’s first proper visit to England (other than a flying visit for my wedding) so we had made a list of places she must visit.  Warwick Castle was at the top of the list.  We headed off together was Monkey’s first visit to the castle.

It’s a proper castle, not a ruin, you can walk along the ramparts and feel the history of the place.  There are optional extras should you fancy it, but really there is enough with the castle, grounds and birds of prey to keep you occupied.  It has a timeless quality to it, I’ve been looking over photos from both trips and considering they are 3 years apart – you wouldn’t really be able to tell.

The first time Monkey visited Warwick Castle he was toddling about, the last time he was running around, having fun.  Both trips hold special memories.  The first as it was a time spent with family and friends, the later as it was me and my school boy son enjoying one of my favourite places, again with friends.

I thought I’d put a collage together of the two trips and share some of those memories with you.

I’m really looking forward to the next few years at Warwick Castle with Monkey.  Sharing my love of history with him and bringing it alive for him.  It’s a gem of a place to have near us.  The kind of place you can’t get bored with, yes it’s quite expensive these days for families, but there is normally a deal to be had.  We were given free access on our last trip and a car parking token (I continue my plea – please make parking free like the good old days).

If you want to explain medieval history to children I really can’t think of anywhere better in this part of the country. We’ll be back, bringing history alive, learning and having fun.  I defy anyone to think that history is boring after a trip to Warwick Castle.

disclaimer:  we were given free tickets on our recent visit to Warwick Castle, but my comments remain my own honest opinions.

  1. Warwick castle is on our list of places to visits. We visited our local castle recently and the boy loved it more than I thought he would. I love the pic of monkey’s teddy being the chimney sweep 🙂 #countrykids

  2. My son went to Warwick Castle on his school trip last week and loved it. He particularly enjoyed the trebouchet – I had an incredibly detailed description of how it worked relayed back to me when he came home so it must have been good (everything is usually ‘fine’ or ‘good’). #countrykids

  3. Warwick castle is on my must-visit-list, especially ever-since my mother-in-law got me into reading Philippa Gregory’s books 😉 As always, your little boy looks adorable! #countrykids.

  4. I love that Warwick Castle really looks like something out of a childrens book. You can feel the battles of old and wonder it must hold for children to explore. your photos are stunning and as you say timeless, I can’t tell which was from which visit. thank you for sharing on Country Kids and delighted to hear your PC is all back up and running with your pictures in tact.

  5. I’m so glad you haven’t lost all of your pictures-they’re lovely. Warwick is a great spot, and I totally agree with you about the parking fees-really does annoy me as well.
We had a lovely visit too-all the better for sharing it with friends xx

  6. What lovely photos and memories. We love Warwick Castle too but haven’t been since E was about a year old! I would love to take our two soon.

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
