Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper – app review

As you all know Monkey started school in September and has taken to phonics  like a duck to water.  He’s doing really well with his school reading books and when we were asked to try out the Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper app, I thought the timing was perfect.

Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper

Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper has been created by the team at Gazoob and the app has a range of interactive activities for young children as they start their reading journey.  There are six levels of reading books as well as phonics activities for children to work through.

Although I’ve heard of the Biff, Chip & Kipper series, the app was our first real experience.  I hadn’t realised that Biff, Chip & Kipper were the name of children.  Once we’d both got over that revelation it was down to looking at the books in Level 1 – Getting ready to read section.

The books Monkey has been reading at school are very animal based, so it’s been nice for us to look at the Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper books in the app.  These are far more focused around the family, so can seem a bit more relevant.  You can read the book yourself or use auto play for narration.

At the end of each book there is a Talk About the Story section with a number of questions. A great way to see how much of the story Monkey has understood.   The biggest hit has been the interactive activity section – In the very first book Get On, there is a maze and Monkey had to help Biff and Chip get to the sea.

We then read Who Can You See?  At the end of this story and activities we found out we needed to find shells throughout the Get On story.  Back we went, read the stories again and found the seashells, much to Monkey’s delight!

In the Phonics books Monkey has practicing his letter sounds, matching the right objects to the right letter and tracing his letters too.  The series of books works through rhyming words before moving on to more stories.

These books are really great, you can tap on the pictures for additional sounds, and the speech bubbles for additional text.  The Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper app has really helped to broaden Monkey’s reading ability over the last few weeks.  We still forget who is who with the children, but the activities at the end of each story are an added incentive to concentrate on each book.

The Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper includes 48 books across six levels, with each level containing four reading books and four phonics books.  Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper: Library is currently available as a free app, offering two free books from level 1 when you download the library. There is also a special discounted price in place for a limited time, offering levels 1-3 for just £4.99.

The Read with Biff, Chip & Kipper is available from the App Store for iPhones and iPads, Google Play and Windows Store.
