Bucklebury Farm Park

Bucklebury Farm Park #CountryKids

I’m taking you back to warm sunny, summer days today, my summer of fun post this week takes us to Bucklebury Farm Park, near to Reading in Berkshire.

Bucklebury Farm Park

The village of Bucklebury has become famous the world over for being the home of the Duchess of Cambridge, but my family were there first!  I love family history and I’ve traced my Granny’s family back to Bucklebury in the late 1700/early 1800, so I was more than well aware of the village before it became so famous.  But, saying that I’d never actually been to Bucklebury Farm Park.  It was an ideal place to meet up with Monkey’s Godmummy and her daughter during the school holidays, so we had a day out on the farm.

Of course, just our luck we chose one of the wonderful English summer days where it went from torrential rain to glorious sunshine, and back to rain throughout the day.  But we went prepared with mac, sun hats and sun cream!  There’s plenty of parking at Bucklebury Farm Park with a short walk to the farm entrance area.  As Godmummy and I do like to have a cuppa and a quick chat before we start our adventures we met up in the cafe area. There were lots of homemade treats on offer, it was hard to resist!

Once we’d had a refresher, it was time to explore the farm park.  Monkey spotted the play area and he was off.

The play area is lovely, with old tractors, a wooden combine harvester climbing frame with slide,

a wooden train and swings.  There is also an area for older children including a zip wire and go karts, as well as a den building area.

I was really impressed before we’d even seen any farm animals.  Everywhere looked really fresh and well maintained and there was lots of room for children to run around in a safe environment.

Bucklebury Farm Park has a great deer park which you can visit as part of the tractor-trailer rides.

Even better, the tractor-trailer rides are free, and take about 15 minutes with the opportunity to feed some of the deer.

The deer farm is home to Red, Sika, Axis, and my favourite, Fallow Deer.  We got to see them in all their beauty.  Monkey wasn’t quite brave enough to feed them but it was still great to watch them come right up to the trailer.

After the tractor-trailer ride we decided to explore nature trail to build up an appetite for lunch.  We meet the geese, ducks and chickens and walked along part of the deer park before heading into a wooden area for some fun.

There are picnic benches available if you bring your own food, and a marquee which came in very handy as it chucked it down just as we were finishing our nature walk.  Our friends had bought a picnic with them, and we ordered food from the cafe which was brought out to us in the marquee.  The toilets were close at hand too.

After a good lunch we decided that it was time to explore the farm part of Bucklebury Farm Park!  Unfortunately, Monkey decided to have one of those ‘don’t you just love them’ moments.

But when he’d finally calmed down, he got to enjoy seeing the various animals and found his favourite thing.  The wind up tractor/trailer that you can fill with pig food and send down a ramp to the waiting piggies!  He loves these devices.

We still hadn’t finished exploring Bucklebury Farm Park!  I mentioned den building and Monkey and Miss M were off like a shot.

Before we got to the den building area something rather amazing happened, my son, who doesn’t try anything new, did!

Then came some serious den building.

Before Godmummy sent the whole lot tumbling to the ground!  Oops, quick distraction needed – lets head for the observation tower kids and walk through the wild walk!

We’d had an action packed day at Bucklebury Farm Park, both kids really enjoyed themselves and us Mum’s were impressed with what was on offer.  We will certainly be back.

  6. It looks a great place, I love the idea of the marquee, I am looking into one of these for craft hour here on the farm and I love their tractor and trailer, they make ours look small! I have just pinned the den building photo as this is one of my projects for Coombe Mill. I hope to have ours up and running before you arrive at Easter. Lots of inspiration here, Bucklebury looks wonderful. Thank you for sharing with me on Country Kids.

  7. Wow! My monkey would absolutely love it here, especially the trailer tractor ride. In fact, I think I love that too. The deers are gorgeous. I could never tire of looking at them in their own habitat. And the play areas look really well though out. Ahh to be Summer again! #countrykids
