Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set – a TOMY review

As Monkey is growing up I can see that his interest in different types of toys is growing; especially as his best friend is a big wrestling fan!  We’ve been trying out the Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set from Tomy recently, and this is a totally new concept for us.

I really wasn’t sure how the Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set would go down here if I’m totally honest.  The suggested lower age range is 6 and Monkey has just turned 5. Also he’s not massively into superheros and the like and we’ve kept well away from any ‘fight’ orientated games before.  But the boy is growing up and I have to accept that his play will change to some degree too.

The Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set comes with two Battroborg Bot’s – in this instance a Ninja Bot and a Samurai Bot, a play arena and two controllers.  What it doesn’t come with are the 8 x AA batteries you will need to power the controllers (4 in each).  Regular readers will know I’m never happy unless batteries are included with games.  I think, in this instance it’s a real shame they’re not – 8 to find on Christmas morning could leave you with very grumpy kids (just saying).

But anyway, my battery moan aside, on to the Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set itself. The Bots come with different accessories and weapons so your child can customise, this passed Monkey over, but I’m guessing older children will like this feature.

Monkey was all ready to start playing with his new game until I explained that the real fun would happen once we’d charged the controllers.

So we left the Bot’s in their arena.

I went off to find a supply of batteries and then followed the instructions on the leaflet (also available on the Battroborg website) to charge our Bots!  I was praying that this process wouldn’t take long, impatient child and all that.  It took 20 minutes for a first charge which I thought was acceptable.

The charging process is easy to follow.  Let’s face it, if this techno dinosaur can figure it, then anyone can.  There is a docking station for the Bot at the back of the controller, they slide on easily.  You turn the controller on and a green light appears, once the Bot is fully charged the green light goes out – simple.

We were ready for our first battle. But make sure you synch your controller and Bot or you could have an interesting time! Again it’s easy to do – you have A and B options on both controllers and Bots so match them up and away you go.  You know you’ve done it correctly when your Bot flashes Green and is ready for action.

Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set can be played either by yourself or with two players.  I was honoured that Monkey would let me pit my wits against him.  He already knows that Mummy is going to suck at this sort of thing!

The controllers come with wrist straps with an adjustable toggle.  Wear them.  I do actually know someone who smashed their TV when getting rather absorbed with a certain interactive computer game once, when they let go of their controller.  As much as I would love a new TV, probably not the best way to go about it.

Monkey was eager to get started.  There are three infrared sensors around the controller which will activate movement in the Bot, you need to be within an unobstructed 50-100cms area away for the sensors to work and then battle can commence.

Would Monkey love this game?  Of yes!  He’s never seen anything like it.  Mummy I’m moving it!!!  The face says it all I think.  Motion control play has hit our house big time.

He quickly grasped that different hand movements meant different Bot movements and he was spellbound when he realised he could make the Bot’s arms go up and down.  At the moment he has no real concept of what ‘weapons’ are, and I’m quite happy for that to remain.  But he loves the idea of pitting one Bot against the other and ‘beating’ Mummy into surrender.

It’s nice to know that we can play Battroborg Warrior Battle Arena Set together, but that Monkey can still enjoy the game by himself, holding both controllers.  A godsend with an only child.  Being only 5 hasn’t stopped Monkey being able to play or understand this game, so it’s been far better received than I’d initially expected.

I can see this game being a favourite in the years to come as Monkey and his friends really get to grips with the motion activation technology.  Priced at £59.99 this is not a cheap toy, but you’re paying for the technology.  If you hop on over to Amazon right now though, they’ve got a great deal – £29.99 – click on my affiliate link below.

  1. My son keeps seeing these and asking for them! They do sound like fun but I will definitely have to stock up on batteries if we do decide to buy them!

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
