I’ve got a lovely paperback picture book to share with you today. Cowboy Camp is written by American author Tammi Sauer, with some great illustrations from Mike Read.
Poor little Avery would love to be a cowboy but he soon realises when he goes to Cowboy Camp that he doesn’t have the key attributes that all cowboys are expected to have. He doesn’t have quite the right cowboy boots, he appears to be allergic to horse and gets rope burn when he tries to use a lasso.
Monkey doesn’t really know anything about cowboys, times have moved on so much since I was a kid and my brother and I used to play Cowboys and Indians! He asked questions as we read through the book – Mummy, what ARE ‘grits and beans’? Good question Monkey, Mummy might just have to google ‘grits’. I’d heard the expression, but thankfully the internet gave us both a better idea of what it actually looks like. Mummy I wouldn’t like that either!
We follow poor hapless Avery as he fails to make the mark at every turn. That night he sits by the campfire when the others have gone to bed when a baddie comes to visit. Can Avery save the day?
In Cowboy Camp we learn that there is more to being a cowboy than just being about to ride a horse and lasso a cow. Monkey enjoyed reading about Avery and his adventures.
Priced at £5.99 Cowboy Camp is available through Amazon and from all good bookshops.
disclaimer: we were sent this book in exchange for an honest review.

Also, if you can find a store with American imports, I’d really recommend trying grits. I’ve not had them with beans, but I think they’re delicious. I like them with butter and sugar. Some people prefer them savory, with salt and pepper. They’re really quite versatile. I kind of want to get some to try with beans now just to see what I think.
Tesco have grits (dont know about other supermarkets) – alternative is online at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Quaker-Instant-Grits-340g/dp/B003C28H9Y
