Calvin, Look Out!

Calvin, Look Out! – a book review

I have a lovely picture book to share with you today called Calvin, Look Out! which is written by Jennifer Berne.

Calvin, Look Out!

I never thought I’d have something in common with a Starling, but it would appear that Calvin and I both suffer with poor sight!

In Calvin, Look Out! we meet the little Starling who just loves reading. the only problem is he can’t read the books very well.  He keeps getting the words wrong and the helpful Librarian suggests that maybe Calvin needs to get his eyes checked.

Calvin, Look Out!

We follow Calvin through his eye test (I will need to remember this book as and when Monkey has an eye test) and yes he needed spectacles.  Although he was really proud of them, his cousins all started laughing at him, he looked different from them.

Monkey has friends who wear glasses, Daddy P wears them too and I wear contact lenses. Mummy, they aren’t being nice are they?  No Monkey they are not.

When Calvin gets into trouble, he remembers morse code and is able to use his new glasses to put out a distress signal.  Monkey thought that was very clever and we went off on a bit of a tangent about what morse code is.  But I like that, I like books that prompt discussions.

Back to the story, the flock of starlings come to Calvin’s rescue and all of a sudden wearing spectacles isn’t so geeky after all.

Calvin, Look Out! is a lovely book to read together, with a good message behind it.  Monkey has thoroughly enjoyed it.  The illustrations from Keith Bendis are humorous and work really well with the story.  Priced at £9.99 this book is available from Amazon (see affiliate link below) as well as from major bookstores.  We give it a thumbs up in this house.

disclaimer:  we were sent this book in exchange for an honest review

  1. Awww what a sweet book. My hubby and I both wear glasses so we fully expect at some point that M is going to have to wear glasses too. This would be a great book to read before going to get her eyes tested.

It would be great if you could share this my new Weekend Book Club linky (and any other book related posts if you want).

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
