Thomas turns 70

Thomas turns 70 #ThomasUK

You all know we love Thomas & Friends here, it’s no secret.  In a train obsessed household the little blue tank engine has been a fundamental part of my 5 year old Monkey’s childhood, as with my own.  Thomas turns 70 this month and we went along to help him celebrate his birthday!

One very excited Monkey and I travelled down to London last Saturday, by train obviously. We’d received a very special birthday party invitation. Thomas turns 70 and we’d been invited to share some cake.  How could we refuse!  We had a quick look round the Egyptian hall at the British Museum and then headed to the party.

Monkey was amongst the first guests to arrive, but the party was soon in full swing and he got a little overwhelmed by it all.  But Thomas was there and all the children loved getting up close to wish him many happy returns.

There was face painting, balloon modelling, craft activities and of course a train set to play with.

We soon discovered that there was a theatre where episodes of Thomas & Friends were being shown.  Entertainment from Monkey’s favourites – Dusty and Rusty and a great story-teller called Liz.  Monkey adores Dusty and Rusty and he was thrilled to see them and the Fat Controller.

Before we knew it was time to get together, sing Thomas ‘Happy Birthday’ and eat cake!

I’m told the cake was very nice, unfortunately Monkey decided not to share!  Uum.

Whilst we’d been enjoying listening to various Thomas & Friends stories and watching episodes, a number of other guest had arrived and the party was really buzzing.

Thomas turns 70 and his party was just the start of a year of celebrations.  He’s certainly come a long way since the Reverend W Awdry wrote  the start of “The Railway Series”  in 1945 as a collection of stories featuring Thomas the Tank Engine™.  I have lots of fond memories of reading the original stories with my brother when we were children, and now with Monkey.  I’m sure in years to come Monkey will continue the tradition with his own children.

Watch out for another new Thomas & Friends DVD review coming up on the blog soon!

disclaimer:  we were given a goodie bag for attending this event, but our thoughts and comments remain our own.

  1. Little Man is Thomas’ newest fan, he seems to have started loving him just as he was turning two and now sleeps with a little Thomas toy every night. So cute! This looks like a great event, the cake looks fab! x

  2. What an invitation! A little boy in our house would love to get that close to Thomas, he was complaining earlier in the week that he only has two Thomas trains and needs more.

I'd love to hear from you and try to reply to all comments
