We’re off to Spain in a couple of weeks and I wanted to work on my rather rusty Spanish beforehand, I’ve been using the uTalk language app to help me! The app is available for both iPhone and iPad users.
The basic uTalk language app is free, offering 120 different languages, you can then upgrade in an in-app purchase for more features for a specific language. As I’ve mentioned already, I’ve been looking at the Spanish premium app which costs £11.99.
Once I’d installed the Premium app I could see I’d never be bored with the uTalk language app! There are so many subjects to choose from:
First Words, Adjectives, Holiday, Food and Drink, Fruit, Vegetables, Transport, Travelling, Directions, Accommodation, Numbers up to 20, Numbers up to 10 million!, Time, Phrases, Restaurant, Social Phrases, Emergencies, Body, Doctor, Clothes, Shopping Words, Shopping Phrases, Technology, Prepositions, Colours, Calendar, Illness, Likes and Dislikes, Leisure, Sports, Countries, Outdoors, Family, Animals and Alphabet.
See what I mean – very comprehensive. In each category there are different options to practice your language skills.
In the Practice game, you can listen to words and phrases being spoken and you see them on-screen too. You can then record yourself and listen back to your attempt as well as listening to how it should be said. I think it would be great if the app could highlight words as they are being spoken to help beginners. I’ve found this game really useful as I know my pronunciation needs working on! My hearing isn’t the best so I do wish there was an option for the speakers to speak a little slower, so I have more time to hear what’s being said, but there is a repeat button. Update: I’ve been advised that there is a button to slow this down – I will be trying that out!
Once you’ve worked through the uTalk language app vocabulary for the section, then there are a number of other games to play – easy, speaking , hard and memory games and I’ve been working my way through these games over the last month.
When you complete each game you go on a World Tour, learning about different destinations as you go.
Although the app is a little advanced for my 5 year old son, he has enjoyed listening to the First Words, Colours and Numbers with me and I’ll certainly be using the app to help him improve his Spanish in the years to come.
The real test will come when I’m surrounded by our Spanish friends in a couple of weeks, but hopefully I’ll have improved since our last visit!
disclaimer: we were given free access to this app in exchange for an honest review
