First foreign language word board books

First foreign language word board books

As you all know, my parents live in Spain and I’m eager for Monkey to speak Spanish as he grows up.  I recently came across a couple of First foreign language word board books from Sterling Books which would make a charming addition to any youngsters book shelf. How Penguin Says Please and How Tiger Says Thank You have taught both Monkey and I a few new words in different languages!

First foreign language word board books

Both books are written by Abigail Samoun and illustrated by Sarah Watts and introduce younger children to the words Please and Thank You in eight different languages – English, French, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Mandarin,  Japanese and Spanish.

The books follow the same format, but with different characters.  So in How Penguin Says Please, we follow as she going on a round the world adventure.  She says please when asking for cakes in France, when she wants to take a taxi to the Pyramids in Egypt and when asking for a cup of tea in India.  Each language word has a phonic sound split too, to help children (and parents) ensure the work or phrase is said correctly.

Tiger is also off on a world-wide adventure and we follow her in How Tiger Says Thank You as she buys a Russian Doll in Russia, drinks coffee by the Nile in Egypt and as she goes on a rickshaw ride in China.

At the end of each book there is world map showing where each character has visited. Although these are board books, my 5 and half year old has been enthralled as we’ve both got to grips with some new languages.

I think they are a great idea and I hope there will be more in the series.  Priced at £4.99 I’ve included my Amazon Affiliate links below for your reference.
